The Elegant Origin – the 1963 Porsche 356 B 1600 S
First unveiled in 1948, the Porsche 356 was founded on a simple principle: take components from large-scale production and use them to build a popular sports car. The 356 was therefore based on the Volkswagen Beetle – and indeed it resembles a flatter, sleeker Beetle.
The body appears somewhat rounded, the track notably narrow. The then-unusual design follows the Cisitalia penned by Pininfarina a year earlier: low-slung, compact and efficient – and at first almost entirely devoid of chrome embellishment. The design was groundbreaking and marked nothing less than the birth of the modern post-war sports car.
Porsche’s first production model went on to become a tremendous success, with more than 76,000 units sold. Over time, additional chrome detailing and greater comfort were introduced, not least because many Porsches were exported to the United States. The 356 B, presented in 1959, featured higher-mounted bumpers and headlamps, giving it a distinctly friendlier appearance.
This 356 B Cabriolet was completed at the end of October 1962. Only a few hundred examples of the more powerful S version, producing around 80 bhp, were built that year. Finished in Champagne Yellow with brown leather and ordered with a Blaupunkt radio, the Cabriolet was delivered to the United States. Following its re-importation, the Porsche was restored in Germany before coming to its current owner in Switzerland in 2013. Since then, more than CHF 35,000 has been invested in the car. In addition to maintenance and repairs, an electric power steering system has been installed. According to our workshop inspection, further work is nevertheless required, which also explains the modest estimate.
