Style, Star & Straight-Six – the 300 SL Roadster of 1989
In the spring of 1989, Swiss folk music presenter Sepp Trütsch purchased this 300 SL. At the time, the model was nearing the end of a long production run and was more refined than ever. Between the first example in 1971 and one of the last in 1989, countless small changes and improvements were made. Beneath the bonnet works the in-line six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 3 litres, first introduced in 1985, which is why our example proudly bears the name 300 SL. This magical combination is reminiscent of the legendary 1950s “Gullwing”.
As early as 1988, motoring journalist Fritz B. Busch — no stranger to the scene — answered the question of whether the 300 SL would one day become a classic car: “Most certainly, there is no doubt whatsoever. It will become one, for it has only two seats, a fabric soft top, more than two dozen metres of chrome, and it is a Mercedes. Added to this are several kilograms of chrome-plated fittings, hewn from solid metal — and let us not forget that quarter of a square metre in the cockpit that looks like burr walnut.”
But back to our 300 SL. The consignor is only the third keeper. The first owner, Sepp Trütsch, is likely to have kept the car for almost 30 years and had it regularly serviced, as documented in the service booklet. The current owner invested nearly CHF 9,000 in this exceptionally well-preserved example in the past year alone. Last inspected as a veteran vehicle in 2022 and with a guaranteed mere 89,000 kilometres on the clock, it exudes the character of a car barely a year old. The very clean and well-maintained condition continues in the interior, where, alongside a newly fitted Blaupunkt radio in retro design, even details such as the sun visors were replaced as recently as last year.
