  • Restored matching numbers example

  • Supplied with rare hardtop

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a two-door grand touring convertible with a removable hardtop that was produced between May 1955 and February 1963 with a prototype first shown at the 1954 New York Motor Show. It was sold alongside the faster, more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL which it closely resembled both in its styling, engineering, detailing and fully independent suspension. However, the 190 SL did not use the 300 SL's purpose-built tubular spaceframe W198 platform but was built on a shortened monocoque R121 unit. The 190 SL was powered by a new 1.9 litre straight-four SOHC engine that developed 104bhp and was later also used in the W120, 180 and W121, 190 models. The four-cylinder engine block of the 190 SL was based on the six- cylinder engine of the 300SL.

This beautifully restored matching numbers example of the iconic 190 SL is presented in a light blue with contrasting black hood, white hardtop roof and beautifully retrimmed blue leather interior. Commissioned by our vendor, who has owned the car since 2014, to be fully restored by a leading restorer in Europe for which there is a photographic record of the process explaining all works in detail, a no expense spared program followed and was completed in 2016 culminating in the finished article we have here. The engine boasts twin Webers and was rebuilt during restoration. The detailed period dashboard is a stunning place to be, the glovebox has an inset clock and the chromework is excellent. Ultimately, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL stands as a car that embodied the glamour of postwar Europe and the growing international reputation of Mercedes-Benz. It wasn’t the fastest sportscar of its time, but it delivered style, quality, and everyday usability, making it an enduring classic and a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz’s rich heritage in open-top motoring, this example is amongst the very best found on the market today.
