Description

The first-generation Ford Transit or the Transit Mk. I was introduced in October 1965, taking over directly from the Ford Thames 400E, and has been in continuous production in three basic generations to the present day. The van was produced initially at Ford's Langley facility in Berkshire (a former Second World War aircraft factory which had produced Hawker Hurricane fighters), but demand outstripped the capability of the plant, and production was moved to Southampton until its closure in 2013. Powered by a range of petrol and diesel engines, it was known for reliability and ease of maintenance. With its tough build, iconic boxy styling and everyday utility, the Mk. I Transit became a trusted companion for countless businesses.

Originally registered in New Zealand in 1975 having originated from the UK, this Mk. I long wheelbase model with dual rear wheels was initially a post office van on the South Island before later in life being converted to a camper but all before our vendor took custody in 2018. Currently presented in white, the van was subject to a £90,000 restoration and build culminating in a fabulous five litre fuel injected V8 being installed and coupled to a new transmission, power steering and a Ford 9" diff with a 3:5 ratio crown and pinion. Other works included the two sunroofs being permanently sealed before the van was professionally sound proofed throughout and interior LED lighting installed alongside a stereo fitted with reversing camera. Due to the motorsport support nature of the project, built-in jump start leads are fitted at the rear of the vehicle alongside a tow bar and a removable motorsport kill switch inside the driver's door. The restoration intention was to be a rally service van, but the inside wheel/tyre racks were designed to be easily removable with our vendor quoting '15 minutes to remove them for other use'. Whilst in New Zealand the van was fully certified for the modifications with the plate found in the engine bay next to the original Ford Motor Company. Built with the idea of retaining the standard look externally with the more useful modern running gear underneath, this is not only a wonderfully restored Mk. I Transit, flared arches and motorsport derived, it also boasts an engine that should grace far more classics, fun…fast…collectable, the perfect foil for your RS1800 or RS200 or Mexico?
