Build commenced 13th August 1987 and finished in time for Christmas '87' - completed 21st December road registered in time for the ultimate 'big boys' present. By the 6th of January 1988 the X-PACK was dispatched back to Tickford Street (AM WORKS) for its first service - someone had good festive holiday!

Out of 131 cars which were built in total worldwide, only 11 right hand drive cars were fitted by the factory with a auto gearbox, this example, #12591 was the very first car in this configuration.

V8 Vantage "X-pack" - AML saved the best for last, the V580X V8 Vantage. It was to be the Swan Song for the William Towns designed V8 coupe and the most powerful production Aston Martin built in that era.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage "X-pack", as the final evolution has affectionately become known by owners and enthusiasts alike, it was the culmination of lessons learned over 10 years hand building these atypical "Supercars".

One man's masterpiece - At the heart of any Vantage is its engine, a bespoke masterpiece lovingly assembled by a select few craftsmen with many years of experience. The raw alloy castings were machined in house, with all major components balanced before fitment. In May 1986 a new computerised machining centre was installed for more consistent and efficient preparation of the castings for the V580 X only.

One man was responsible for the engine's complete build process and bench tested it on the factory dynamometer for a minimum of two and a half hours at various pre-determined revolutions and loads. Once set up and tuned to the builders satisfaction, a power curve was carried out with the engine being run up to 6,000 rpm over another hour on the dyno.

To completely build and bench test an engine took 58 man hours, approximately one and a half work weeks. The engine builders kept their own personal records with the power details for each engine they built. Before the engine was fitted to its designated Vantage the builder would fit a brass plaque with his name - in the case of this example 'Don Osborne' is gleaming in brass. It was an idea started by Peter Sprague back in 1977 that was loved by the owners and gave the factory workers great pride in their accomplishment.

Every Aston tells a story but with a Vantage every story is special. Being handbuilt no two cars are alike, just as the owners are all different and unique in their own ways. The Vantage has always attracted a discerning type of owner, not content with the standard model, they seek out the highest performance variant and proudly exploit its potential. Unique points for each car that define their character and make them cherished possessions for their original and subsequent owners.

With the introduction of the M.Y. '88 Vantage, Aston Martin finally made an automatic transmission available for the home market. It was the first time an auto had been officially approved, a few had slipped out for overseas customers or been converted by Works Service. After 10 years of Vantage production one was finally offered for sale with full type approval. Testing had been completed in December before certification was signed off in February 1987 and the option made available for M.Y. '88. Changes to the ignition system were required to control the idle speed and exhaust emissions, especially when the engine was cold.

Aston Martin's enviable reputation for outstanding paintwork was hard earned through meticulous attention to detail and many hours of laborious work to rub down each coat of paint before applying the next. It took three days to complete the first stage of paint on a bare bodyshell. Over the next two weeks ten more coats of paint were applied by hand. In total the Vantage wore 21 upon completion. Once the car had been fully fitted up and road tested it received its final 11 colour/clear coats. After each stage the paint was flatted and sanded ready for the following coats.

This example we thrilled and delighted to be able to present, having know the car for north 20 years is something quite special. Over seeing the most recent restoration works which were completed in 2019 this example has covered less than 1,000 miles since then. It is without a doubt an asset for any collection and will bring joy and happiness on every level.
