44 bhp, millions of emotions – the 1971 Beetle 1300
Much has been written about the Volkswagen Beetle. In the period immediately following the Second World War, it was certainly underestimated at first. When the British military administrator in Wolfsburg, Ivan Hirst, initially offered the production facilities to the head of Ford Great Britain, the latter reported back to his boss, Henry Ford II: “Mr Ford, I don’t think what we are being offered here is worth a damn.” Hirst, however, recognised the Beetle’s potential and succeeded in bringing the Wolfsburg factory back into operation. It is largely thanks to his initiative that production was able to resume at all after 1945.
By the mid-1950s, the Beetle had already become the most popular imported car in the United States, and Volkswagen gradually developed into a major international corporation with subsidiaries in Brazil, the Philippines and New Zealand. Meanwhile, company chairman Heinz Heinrich Nordhoff emphasised that Volkswagen’s primary objective was not the development of new models, but the continual refinement of even the smallest detail of the Beetle – right through to perfection.
The Beetle we are offering dates from 1971 and is therefore significantly more powerful and reliable than the original version. It is equipped not only with seat belts, but also with correct period high-back seats. Above all, this Beetle is technically prepared for many more years, as is evident from the comprehensive documentation.
The current owning family has invested heavily in the maintenance of this Beetle since 2008. As a result, the new owner will benefit from a comprehensive engine overhaul with numerous new components carried out in 2022. Together with further documentation, work carried out and invoices are available dating back to 2004. Even the previous owner spared no expense, having the body stripped back to bare metal, during which the floorpan was also restored. The respray in the colour Black Diamond, applied at that time, is still worn by the Beetle today.
