The connoisseur will have noticed it already. No, what we are looking at here is not a Cabrioni or Lamm cabriolet conversion of the iconic classic MINI. If you are not quite sure what this is, we forgive you immediately. This is an original Rover Mini Convertible. We can almost hear you thinking: an original convertible?

Yes indeed, and this is how it came about. In the early 1990s, Rover watched with some dismay the success enjoyed by companies such as Cabrioni and the German Rover Mini dealer Lamm with their cabriolet conversions based on the Mini. As a result, Rover decided that it should introduce its own Rover Mini Convertible. Lamm had already been converting Minis as early as the 1980s, and now received the official commission from Rover.

The first 75 examples were produced in a special way. Mini sent already-built cars to the German dealer Lamm in Achern, where the team removed the roof, fitted a new soft top, and installed additional reinforcement beams underneath the car to increase body rigidity. The seats also received new upholstery. All cars were painted in “Cherry Red,” were right-hand drive, and were available exclusively through 12 selected Rover dealers in Great Britain to gauge customer interest in this version. That interest proved strong enough: all cars were sold within a month.

RSP (Rover Special Products) therefore decided to produce a Mini Convertible themselves in a limited run. A Lamm Mini cabriolet conversion was used as the starting point in order to keep development costs low. The aim was to develop an affordable convertible variant. However, in true British fashion – so delightfully stubborn as they are – the Rover convertible version was almost completely redesigned from scratch.

Although the design was based on the Lamm version, the loss of rigidity caused by removing the metal roof was compensated by adding additional sills. In addition, RSP closed an opening beneath the rear seat and sought alternative mounting points for the seat belts. The roof construction also had to be a fully fledged soft top, without snap fasteners along the sides.

The result was a convertible version that can be described as rigid thanks to various reinforcements, features a soft top without snap fasteners, is equipped with four roll-down glass side windows, and has four three-point seat belts. The only element more or less directly adopted from Lamm is the body kit with which all original Rover Mini Convertibles were delivered. At first glance these are exactly the same, although, of course, the British still produced them in a slightly different way.

The newly developed Mini version made its debut at the NEC Motor Show in 1992 and reached dealers worldwide in 1993. Initially it was available in “Nightfire Red” or “Caribbean Blue,” with “British Racing Green” added to the range from 1994 onwards. All three colours were metallic paints. The convertible was offered in only a limited number of countries and was never officially available in the Netherlands. Given the price, the importer saw little potential: due to the development costs, the convertible version was twice as expensive as a standard Mini.

The Mini Cooper served as the basis for the Mini Convertible, using the well-known and reliable 1275 cc engine. You will no doubt know how delightfully lively such a Mini is: wonderfully direct steering, superb agility, and, especially in terms of feel, lively performance from the 1275 engine. But the convertible version truly takes this to another level and, especially with the roof down, is a feast for all the senses.

The car truly comes into its own on winding roads and narrow streets. There are – and we mean this sincerely – very few cars that offer so much fun with such low running costs. This is a car that is guaranteed to put you in a good mood every single time. And the nice thing is: bystanders feel it too. This car has an exceptionally high “smile factor.” With it, you can even park on the pavement in France, where such privileges are normally reserved for French cultural heritage like the 2CV or 4CV, right in front of the bakery while being showered with compliments. The French equivalent of our parking enforcement officer might not even dare to issue a fine anymore. Disclaimer: past performance is no guarantee of present results.

When a car is being promoted, it is often quickly described as rare and unique… In this case, only 1,081 Rover Mini Convertibles were built, including 300 right-hand-drive examples. Just three colours were available: Nightfire Red, Caribbean Blue, and British Racing Green. All convertibles were fitted with the same beautiful genuine wood accents, the aforementioned body kit, 12-inch alloy wheels, and a grey velour interior with sport seats. The convertibles finished in Caribbean Blue and British Racing Green had a grey soft top. Only the Nightfire Red cars were equipped with a dark red soft top and matching tonneau cover, colour-matched to the body. In our humble opinion, that makes it the most beautiful of the three.

This Mini was originally delivered new in Germany on 22 September 1995 to a dealer, who registered it as a demonstrator. On 1 April 1996, with just 345 km on the odometer, the Mini was sold to its first private owner for 19,900 DM. She kept the car until early 2022. After that, it was purchased by a Dutch owner, on whose behalf the car is now being offered for sale. The convertible has a fully traceable mileage of 24,459 km and is now registered in the Netherlands.

We are aware that there are other Rover Mini Convertibles on the market with low mileage, sometimes even with few owners. However, they are rarely found in this condition. Many have suffered from coastal use or show the scars of city life. A convertible with a demonstrably low mileage, few owners, and a sheltered life in a garage should, unlike the average example on the market, be virtually as new. That is why we have included an extensive photo report with this Mini. The photographs speak volumes. For example, the production stickers for the body kit from 1995 are still present on the inside of the front bumper. It is up to you to decide whether that is rare and unique, and whether it justifies the price.

If you can already see yourself cruising in style, for example along the Côte d’Azur, you can be sure of attracting more attention than in any red Ferrari. You are very welcome to come and admire the car in Boxtel!
