*Not Just Any Phantom V But a Coachbuilt Statement from Another Era
*
This is not simply a Rolls-Royce Phantom V. This is one of the most exclusive examples of the model: a James Young bodied limousine, built in extremely limited numbers and presented in a condition that immediately stands out.
Let’s begin with what matters most. Only 13 examples were built in this specific configuration. This particular car comes with an extensive history file, was delivered new in France, and has spent its life in private collections ever since. It has been maintained by specialists, recently serviced, and preserved in a way that is increasingly rare to find.
To understand why this car exists, you have to go back to 1959. That is when Rolls-Royce introduced the Phantom V, effectively replacing both the Phantom IV and the Silver Wraith. The goal was clear: more space, more comfort, and a platform that allowed coachbuilders to create limousines without compromise. The result was a chassis of over six meters in length, based on a strengthened Silver Cloud II foundation, offering both interior space and elegant proportions.
This particular example, bodied by James Young, was displayed at the 1962 Paris Salon at Porte de Versailles. A setting that suited the car perfectly. From there, it was delivered to its first owner, Mr. and Mrs. Washington, at their estate in Mougins in the South of France. That French origin is still visible today, with details such as the yellow headlamps, Marshall parking lights on the B-post, and specific bumper overriders.
What makes this Phantom V particularly interesting is not just its origin, but how it has been treated throughout its life. After its first ownership, the car remained in private hands only, occasionally driven and carefully preserved. From 2006 until 2024, it formed part of a private royal collection, stored in a climate-controlled environment.
And then there is the experience itself. Sitting in this car places you in a completely different setting. The proportions, the seating position, the silence, everything is designed around comfort and presence. Not in an exaggerated way, but in a manner that feels deliberate and composed.
The condition reflects that same approach. The bodywork, the interior, the details, all present in a state that aligns with careful long-term ownership and specialist maintenance. Nothing feels out of place, nothing feels overdone. But at the same time: did you see the cocktail cabinet in the interior? And the difference between leather upholstery at the front of the interior and the cloth rear seats? These are fantastic details that make this car not only stand out, but also very typical for the image this car has.
So what are you looking at here? A coachbuilt Phantom V, displayed at a world-famous exhibition when new, delivered new to the South of France, preserved in private collections, and maintained to a high standard throughout its life. And the details of this Rolls? Amazing.
