The MG F-Type Magna was introduced in 1932 as an important model within MG's early production history. With this model, MG introduced its first six-cylinder engine, marking a significant step in the brand's development within the compact sports car segment. The MG F-Type Magna belongs to the period in which MG established its reputation for lightweight, characterful sports cars that were mechanically straightforward yet purposefully engineered.
The F-Type Magna was offered in several body styles and was distinguished by its long bonnet and raked radiator grille. These features clearly set the MG F-Type Magna apart from the conventional compact cars of its era. Thanks to its proportions and engineering, the model quickly secured a place in the history of pre-war sports cars. Its nickname, the "Little Blue Train", refers to its visual resemblance to the famous Bentley, although the MG F-Type Magna was by no means directly derived from it.
The 1,285 cc inline six-cylinder engine made the MG F-Type Magna a remarkable model within the MG range. For MG, it represented an important technical as well as commercial step, offering a distinctly different character from the four-cylinder models that dominated the marque's line-up at the time. As such, the MG F-Type Magna established a recognisable position not only within the MG family but also among the broader market of early sports cars.
This MG F-Type Magna Salonette is a particularly rare version. Approximately 390 examples of this body style were built when new, while fewer than ten are known to survive today. According to the F-Type Register, this may well be the oldest surviving original Salonette in existence. It is also a matching numbers example, underlining the car's historical authenticity.
The car has been fully restored in a period-correct colour scheme and is accompanied by its original "Pass-out Voucher" dated 9 January 1932, as well as an original "MG Magna Motoring" brochure. The MG F-Type Magna is powered by its wonderfully smooth and torque-rich 1,285 cc inline six-cylinder engine, coupled to a competition-derived gearbox. The engine produces a remarkably distinctive sound—reminiscent of a large pre-war Bentley approaching—which is characteristic of the MG F-Type Magna and perfectly suits its sporting nature. This combination of engineering defines much of the car's character and delivers the authentic pre-war sports car driving experience for which the model is renowned.
Within any collection, an MG F-Type Magna Salonette occupies a special place thanks to its rarity, documentation and unique body style. This Salonette is therefore exceptionally well suited for participation in Concours d'Elegance events. An enjoyable detail is that, thanks to the originality and colour scheme of this particular Salonette, an exact scale model has been produced based on this very car.
