Mercedes-Benz combined the classic W111 body with the newly developed M116 V8, creating a grand tourer that brought together traditional styling and modern powertrain technology. The 3,499 cc eight-cylinder engine produces 200 PS (197 hp) and is particularly distinguished by its exceptional smoothness and effortless power delivery. This refined character made the new V8 an ideal complement to the elegant coupé and cabriolet.
The 280 SE 3.5 also received a subtle visual evolution. Its lower and wider front end, featuring the so-called “low radiator” grille, gave the car a more contemporary appearance without sacrificing the characteristic proportions of the W111. The combination of a long bonnet, crisply defined side profile, and balanced overhangs retained the understated elegance that continues to distinguish the open Mercedes-Benz models of this series.
