Few vehicles have achieved the enduring status of the original two-door Range Rover. Introduced in 1970, it successfully combined genuine off-road capability with on-road comfort and refinement, creating an entirely new sector of the market. Today, early examples are among the most sought-after of all classic Land Rovers, particularly Suffix A cars such as the example offered here.

According to its accompanying Heritage Certificate, this Range Rover was dispatched new to Henlys of London as a right hand drive home market car, finished in its original and highly attractive colour combination of Davos White with a tan interior. Showing just 36,850 miles, the vendor believes this to be correct having researched the car's history and reviewed previous MoT records. Ownership is recorded as four keepers from new. The current owner acquired the Range Rover in 2016 after spotting it on eBay. Assuming Colwyn Bay was somewhere near Eastbourne and therefore close to his home in Kent, he successfully outbid 46 other bidders before discovering the vehicle was in North Wales. Undeterred, he travelled over six hours to collect it and then drove the Range Rover the 328 miles home without incident, a journey that convinced him he had found the right car, despite it looking worse than it had in the photos.

Having long dreamt of owning an early two-door Range Rover, he subsequently embarked upon a comprehensive restoration lasting approximately three years. The vehicle was stripped and rebuilt with a detailed photographic record maintained throughout, now presented in four albums within the history file. The chassis was sandblasted, treated, painted and undersealed, all suspension bushes were renewed and substantial mechanical work undertaken. Replacement components included suspension parts, fuel tank, fuel pump, brakes and brake lines, while significant expenditure was directed towards the front suspension, front wings and swivel joints. Virtually every seal and gasket above the exhaust system was also renewed.Determined to preserve originality wherever possible, the vendor sourced numerous correct components including a desirable overdrive unit and a complete factory power steering system, both of which greatly enhance usability.

The interior was refurbished with the seats dismantled, the frames powder-coated and new seat bases and padding fitted. Additional carpeting and soundproofing were installed to improve refinement. Further works included a new headlining, windscreen and rubber surround, sandblasted & re-power coated original wheels, clutch replaced by Kingsley Cars, replacement lights and reflectors, wider tyres including the spare wheel and the addition of an optional front anti-roll bar. The bodywork was professionally refinished by Coker & Sons.

The history file is exceptionally comprehensive, containing a large quantity of invoices together with the aforementioned photographic record. The car was also featured extensively in the motoring press, including an eight-page feature in Classic Retro Modern magazine and a five-page feature in Classic Land Rover magazine, where it appeared as the cover star. Numerous Range Rover Register publications documenting the restoration also accompany the vehicle.Whilst not presented as a concours example and displaying minor signs of use including a small scratch to the left rear quarter panel, this Suffix A Range Rover represents a wonderfully honest and extensively restored example. An independent valuation carried out in 2021 assessed the vehicle at £70,000, making the auction estimate appear particularly attractive. Ready to be used and enjoyed, it is a testament to the dedication of an enthusiast owner who successfully rescued and preserved one of the most iconic British vehicles ever produced.
