Legendary Luxury, Racing DNA – the 1963 Jaguar Mark 2

With the MK II, Jaguar created one of those designs in the late 1950s that went on to achieve significance far beyond its original purpose. The sporting saloon combined elegant proportions and a high-quality interior with the performance of a fully fledged sports car. In doing so, Jaguar established a concept that remains characteristic of the marque to this day: British luxury combined with outstanding driving dynamics.

Introduced in 1959, the MK II consistently developed the successful concept of its predecessor, the 2.4 Litre. Beneath its long bonnet was the renowned XK inline six-cylinder engine, originally designed as a sports-car powerplant. In the 3.4-litre version, it offered 3,442 cc and 210 hp. Combined with rear-wheel drive and a four-speed manual transmission, this created a remarkably sporting combination for a saloon of its era.

At the same time, the MK II impressed with its distinctive styling. Its slender body, rear-set passenger compartment and generous glazing gave it an unmistakable silhouette. Inside, Jaguar employed the marque's characteristic combination of leather, wood and classic instruments. The result was a motor car that could serve equally well as a prestigious touring car or as a highly engaging driver's car. The example offered here dates from 1963 and was originally registered through Emil Frey AG. The combination of white exterior paintwork and red leather gives the saloon a particularly classic yet striking appearance. The indicated mileage is 17,100 kilometres.

Of particular note is the vehicle's comprehensive restoration. The body was fully restored, with the work documented through extensive photographic records. The mechanical components were also carefully refurbished as part of the restoration. The engine was dismantled and received a cylinder-head overhaul; the carburettors were rebuilt; a new radiator and exhaust system were installed; and the inside of the fuel tank was coated. In addition, a pneumatic brake booster was subsequently installed. This period-appropriate technical enhancement improves the operation of the braking system in modern road traffic without altering the fundamental character of the classic Jaguar.

Around nine years have passed since the restoration was completed, during which time the MK II has covered approximately 17,000 kilometres. This suggests a car that, following its extensive refurbishment, was not merely kept as a showpiece but was regularly driven. The work carried out therefore provides a solid foundation for many more years of enjoyable and stylish motoring.

The most recent veteran inspection took place in May 2023, and the Jaguar is accordingly registered with Swiss veteran status. With its elegant appearance, characterful XK six-cylinder engine and successful combination of comfort and sporting driving characteristics, this MK II embodies the distinctive form of British motoring culture that continues to make it a sought-after classic. A stylish Grand Tourer with genuine Jaguar DNA – equally at home on the open road or making a grand entrance.
