When Alfa Romeo introduced the new Giulia, the brand took a remarkable approach. It did not begin with the sensible version and then gradually work its way up to the flagship model. No, Alfa Romeo unveiled the Quadrifoglio first. That really says it all. From the outset, the new sports sedan had to make it clear where Alfa Romeo was headed: an engine up front, power sent to the rear wheels, and above all, a tremendous focus on the driver.
The 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 510 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, and in this case sends its power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Today, that almost sounds like a formula from another era. Serious performance, rear-wheel drive, three pedals, and a gear lever that lets you decide for yourself exactly what happens. Later Quadrifoglio models became best known with the automatic transmission, which makes this early manual version particularly appealing.
Then there is the rest of the specification. The carbon-ceramic brakes are serious hardware, and behind the wheel you will find fantastic Sparco seats with carbon-fiber trim. You sit low, firmly supported, and exactly as you would want in a car with this kind of character. The Harman Kardon audio system is present as well, although we can easily imagine that you will regularly choose simply to listen to the V6 instead.
The exterior is finished in Rosso Competizione. Combined with the dark five-hole wheels, four exhaust outlets, functional hood vents, and subtle carbon-fiber details, the Giulia looks muscular without losing its elegant shape. And naturally, the famous Quadrifoglio emblems are proudly displayed on the front fenders.
That four-leaf clover, incidentally, has a history at Alfa Romeo that reaches far beyond this Giulia. The Quadrifoglio symbol was already being used on Alfa Romeo competition cars in the 1920s and subsequently became a hallmark of the brand’s sportiest models. On this Giulia, then, it is far more than merely a badge on the front fender.
Technically, the Quadrifoglio is every bit as fascinating. Alfa Romeo used carbon fiber for components including the roof and hood, while weight distribution and chassis development played a major role in the engineering process. You notice that as soon as the road begins to get interesting. The Giulia feels direct, responds quickly to steering inputs, and at the same time has an enormous amount of power at its disposal. In the calmer driving modes, it can be surprisingly relaxed and easygoing. But turn the DNA selector to Race and its character changes dramatically.
The history of this particular example completes the story. The car was delivered new in the Netherlands, has had only two private owners, and has covered fewer than 25,000 kilometers. Its most recent owner is also a former Squadra Bianca driver: someone with genuine experience behind the wheel and a clear affinity for Italian cars and spirited driving. That seems perfectly fitting for a car like this.
And perhaps that is exactly what makes this Giulia so interesting. Modern performance cars are becoming faster, smarter, and increasingly impressive from a technical standpoint, but cars with this particular combination are becoming increasingly scarce: 510 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, a twin-turbo V6, and a six-speed manual transmission. No shift paddles deciding for you when the next gear should arrive. You operate the clutch yourself, shift for yourself, and work for the result yourself.
That makes this Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio much more than simply an exceptionally fast sports sedan. It is a particularly special specification from the early years of the Giulia.
