2021 | Toyota GR Yaris

As car enthusiasts, we should really thank the World Rally Championship for its homologation requirements. Forcing manufacturers to make road car variants of the cars they want to race has resulted in more than a handful of great driver’s cars over the last 40 years. The Toyota GR Yaris is one of the most recent additions to this list and also stands as one of the most exciting. Developed in concert with Toyota and its Gazoo Racing division, the GR Yaris is in many ways the modern answer to many of the famed Group A homologation cars of the 1990s and 2000s like the Lancia Delta Integrale, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and Subaru WRX, and was the pet project of Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda who advocated for its production. As soon as the GR Yaris went into production in September 2020, it began receiving accolades for its driving dynamics and ability to stay ahead of nearly any supercar on an undulating back road.

This 2021 GR Yaris is finished in Tarmac Black and was sold new in Germany before being imported to Italy early in its life. Under the care of just one owner from new, this GR shows just over 26,000 km and has received some light modifications that make the car look great and enhance its performance. The body on the 2-door GR Yaris features a lot of the classic hallmarks of a rally homologation car: bulging fender flares paired with a spoiler hanging off the rear and a deep front bumper with enough space for both a radiator and intercooler. On this Tarmac Black car, a new set of lightweight Bola Flow Formed 5-spoke wheels have been added, which are paired with a set of wheel spacers, pushing them right to the fender line at all 4 corners. The legendary Italian tuning shop and race team Romeo Ferraris, based in Lombardia, IT, completed all of the modifications carried out on this car.

The interior of the GR Yaris is pleasantly simple, with a pair of well-bolstered bucket seats up front and micro-suede centers made to keep you planted even during the most aggressive driving. Upon its introduction, one complaint against the GR Yaris was the high seating position, which made the driver feel like they were sitting on the car rather than inside it. To solve that, a DNA Racing seat lowering kit has been installed on the driver’s seat, which drops the seat up to 30mm while keeping the full range of adjustability. An aftermarket shifter has also been installed, which brings the shift knob more closely in line with the steering wheel for when you’re driving fast and don’t want your hands off the wheel for too long. Carbon fiber trim is present around the interior, and in the center console sits a placard noting that this car was built as a WRC homologation vehicle.

What makes the GR Yaris truly special is the mechanicals under the skin. Powered by a tiny 1.6 liter turbocharged inline 3 cylinder built by Gazoo Racing, the Yaris produces an almost unbelievable 257 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. When paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and the ultra-capable GR-Four all-wheel drive system, the Yaris can sprint from 0-100 kph in just 5.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 143 mph. To help the car breathe a bit more easily, a Ragazzon exhaust with carbon fiber-look tips has been installed that makes the car sound extra sporty without being over the top. In the engine bay, a carbon fiber Eventuri intake has been installed, increasing the induction noise and power by an estimated 15 hp.

If you are after pure driving enjoyment, it is hard to find a better modern vehicle than the GR Yaris. Its rally-bred heritage, paired with a practical hatchback body shape and legendary Toyota reliability, means that the GR Yaris is a performance car that you can use and enjoy every single day.

Questa Yaris GR del 2021 è rifinita in Tarmac Black ed è stata venduta nuova in Germania prima di essere importata in Italia all'inizio della sua vita. Sotto le cure di un solo proprietario fin dalla sua nascita, questa GR ha poco più di 26.000 km e ha ricevuto alcune leggere modifiche che la rendono bellissima e ne migliorano le prestazioni. La carrozzeria della Yaris GR a 2 porte presenta molti dei classici segni distintivi di un'auto omologata per i rally: parafanghi sporgenti abbinati a uno spoiler posteriore e un paraurti anteriore profondo con spazio sufficiente per il radiatore e l'intercooler. Su questa vettura Tarmac Black è stato aggiunto un nuovo set di cerchi Bola Flow Formed a 5 razze leggeri, abbinati a una serie di distanziali che li spingono fino alla linea del parafango in tutti e 4 gli angoli. Il leggendario negozio di tuning e team di gara italiano Romeo Ferraris, con sede in Lombardia, ha effettuato tutte le modifiche apportate a questa vettura.

L'abitacolo della GR Yaris è piacevolmente semplice, con una coppia di sedili anteriori ben imbottiti e centrali in micro-suede che mantengono l'abitabilità anche durante la guida più aggressiva. Al momento della sua introduzione, una lamentela nei confronti della GR Yaris era la posizione di seduta alta, che dava al guidatore la sensazione di essere seduto sull'auto piuttosto che al suo interno. Per risolvere questo problema, sul sedile del guidatore è stato installato un kit di abbassamento DNA Racing, che abbassa il sedile fino a 30 mm mantenendo l'intera gamma di regolazioni. È stato installato anche un cambio aftermarket, che porta il pomello del cambio più in linea con il volante per quando si guida velocemente e non si vogliono staccare le mani dal volante per troppo tempo. All'interno dell'abitacolo sono presenti finiture in fibra di carbonio e nella console centrale è presente una targhetta che indica che quest'auto è stata costruita per l'omologazione WRC.

Ciò che rende la GR Yaris davvero speciale è la meccanica. Alimentata da un piccolo 3 cilindri in linea turbo da 1,6 litri costruito da Gazoo Racing, la Yaris produce una potenza quasi incredibile di 257 cavalli e 266 lb-ft di coppia. Abbinata a un cambio manuale a 6 marce e al sistema di trazione integrale GR-Four, la Yaris è in grado di scattare da 0 a 100 km/h in soli 5,2 secondi e di raggiungere una velocità massima di 143 miglia orarie. Per aiutare l'auto a respirare un po' più facilmente, è stato installato uno scarico Ragazzon con terminali in fibra di carbonio che rende il suono dell'auto più sportivo senza essere eccessivo. Nel vano motore è stata installata una presa d'aria Eventuri in fibra di carbonio che aumenta il rumore di induzione e la potenza di circa 15 CV.

Se cercate il puro divertimento di guida, è difficile trovare un veicolo moderno migliore della GR Yaris. La sua eredità rallystica, abbinata a una pratica carrozzeria a due volumi e alla leggendaria affidabilità Toyota, fa sì che la GR Yaris sia un'auto performante da usare ogni giorno.
