Rolls Royce 25/30 H.J. Mulliner Non Division Sports Saloon
Chassis number: GAR3
Registration Number: GAS932
Supplied new via Dealer University Motors to a first lady owner; one Mrs Earle of Priestlands, Sherbourne, Dorset. She sent the chassis to H.J. Mulliner at the Bedford Park Works in Chiswick to have the spacious owner driver body we find on the car today which was delivered to her in January of 1938. By 1962 the second owner, one B Freed of Beverly Hills California owned the car where the sunny climes were kind to it. By 1998 it was with owner number 3 in the wealthy Palos Verdes estates.
The car returned to these shores in 2002 after which over £34,000 was spent upon it, mostly with Horsfields of Halifax to put it & maintain it in tip top mechanical condition. The history file has over 60 invoices from them minutely detailing the works undertaken. During this time a Tim Payne overdrive was fitted making the car very very relaxed at modern day traffic speeds.
Under the bonnet the car is immaculate with all large tools in place & a silent runniing engine. Under the drivers seat is an almost complete set of small tools in their original green baize covered tray.
The interior of the car is upholstered in sumptuous maroon leather with comfortable adjustable invididual seats up front & a commodious bench seat with fold out arm rest to the rear. Nearly new burgundy carpets are found under foot. The woodwork is all original with some cracking to the surface varnish, but frankly is all the better for it. To the rear of the car is a fold out shelf allowing for luggage to be attached to it. The burgundy over black paint is in generally good order. There is an old touched in ding to the front of the passengers side front wing but the car is currently in the paint shop having this rectified.
The best part of this car however is the way it actually drives. Suspension is soft & supple; The engine imperceptible & gear changes seamless. Engaging the overdrive unit provides a welcome drop in the revs & a strong silent push ever forwards. The massive bills & efforts made to maintain & look after this car are clearly evident as it drives in a manner far far in front of other examples that have not been as well looked after.
Moreover the cabin is spacious in the extreme with huge leg room available to rear & front occupants alike. We drive many pre war Rolls Royce cars each year & this one without doubt is in the top tier. We recently collected the car in Belfast & drove it some 350 miles to London by way of Dublin & Holyhead. The car ran beautifully with good oil pressure & low water temperature indicated on the dash board. It performed the trip with aplomb making one realsie just how capable these ols Rolls Royces are of long distance travel.
