The 356 Speedster
The Porsche 356 Speedster has long been one of the most recognisable and sought-after models in the marque’s history. Developed as a lightweight, open sports car, it combines minimalist styling with an engaging driving experience. The early T2 cars are particularly appealing for their delicate proportions and characteristic period details.
This 356 Speedster
Completed at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen works in 1957 for the 1958 model year, this genuine early T2 Speedster is beautifully finished in Black over red leatherette. The Reutter-built body retains several important original features. Stampings on the fuel tank, front hood, engine lid and both doors confirm that these panels belong to the car, while the trim, chrome details and lighting retain a notably original character. These details provide an appealing connection to the car’s early history.
In 2025, the body was stripped, prepared and refinished in black, code 5701, creating the classic black-over-red combination. The work was carried out to a high standard, with only minor signs of use. Wherever possible, original components were restored rather than replaced, and new-old-stock Porsche parts were used where appropriate. The VDO instruments were restored, and the brightwork was entrusted to specialist restorers. A Moto-Lita steering wheel adds a subtle departure from factory specification.
The car is powered by a replacement 616/36-based engine from the Porsche 912 family, reportedly enlarged to 2.0 litres and 135hp during its installation in 2025. Paired with a four-speed manual transaxle and a 356 C-style short-shift mechanism, it offers a more muscular driving experience than the original specification. Dual Weber IDF 44 carburettors, a Simons sports exhaust and a 12-volt electrical conversion complete the mechanical package.
On the road, the engine starts readily and spins freely, while the gearbox shifts smoothly. The car feels solid and composed, without unusual noises or unwanted movement. The braking system has been rebuilt and upgraded to GT specification, with additional cooling, providing a welcome improvement to braking performance. Wider 15-inch wheels with recent Vredestein Sport Classic tyres complete the purposeful stance.
The odometer currently indicates approximately 32.567 km's, 100km believed to have been covered since the recent restoration work.
The combination of a genuine early Speedster body, a lively 135hp 2.0-litre engine and carefully attended-to mechanicals is particularly attractive, especially for an enthusiast prioritizing the experience behind the wheel.
This is a genuine Porsche 356 A Speedster with desirable T2 features, preserved original body details and a recent, high-quality refresh. Equally suited to spirited road use, classic motoring events and historic rallies, it offers the appeal of one of Porsche’s defining sports cars in a specification that puts driving enjoyment first.
The car is offered with its Porsche documentation and some previous titles.
