1972 Volkswagen T2 Camper
Known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2 and depending on body type, either as a Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, this Volkswagen was also known informally as the Bus in the US and Camper in the UK. Introduced in 1950 as Volkswagen's second car model, it was derived from their first, the Beetle, which was designated the Type 1. This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windscreen and was slightly larger and considerably heavier than its predecessor. Its common nickname is 'Bay-window' or Bay for short. The new model also did away with the swing axle rear suspension and transfer boxes previously used to raise ride height. Instead, half-shafts were fitted with constant velocity joints. Brazil contained the last factory in the world that produced the T2. Production in Brazil ceased on 31st December 2013 due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations, thus marking the end of an era with the rear-engine Volkswagens which first originated in 1935.
This well-appointed T2 was first registered in April 1972, presented in cream over green and in lovely condition, this example was subject to a full restoration in 2013 which is completely documented with accompanying photos in the history file. What appears to have been a no expense spared strip down and rebuild for the then owner, a lady in Llanelli, South Wales culminating in the full repaint in 2014. The van was then used by her until 2021 when our vendor purchased it to use with her partner for holidays and trips away relishing the full T2 camper set-up. Presented with a pop top roof for head room, functioning stove, fridge, hob, rock &roll bed, all camping equipment including a Vango air driveaway awning (as photographed) and well maintained and appointed with in a pleasant retrim, still with that period feel. This camper has uprated electrics and a refurbished engine which was fulfilled in 2021 when our owner purchased it, together with regular MoT's and servicing with the last invoice found to be at 39,202 miles. The history file is generous and contains all invoices from the restoration until its last MoT test certificate but due to lack of use this handsome camper is ready for its next family or owner to experience the great outdoors in what is a cool, practical and a well-appointed T2.
