A 1964 Volkswagen Camper, commonly known as the Volkswagen Type 2, is one of the most recognizable and beloved vehicles ever produced. Part of the first-generation “split-window” series, this model features the iconic divided windshield that gives it a distinctive, friendly face. Built by Volkswagen, the camper quickly became a symbol of freedom, adventure, and countercultural spirit during the 1960s. Powered by a modest rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, these campers were not designed for speed, but for reliability and simplicity. Its lightweight construction and straightforward mechanical design made it relatively easy to maintain. The engine typically produced around 40 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission, allowing drivers to cruise comfortably along scenic highways rather than rush down them. Inside, the camper conversion transformed the practical van into a compact home on wheels.
