History & Origin
This genuine Karmann Ghia was first registered in New Orleans (USA) in May 1971. It was imported to Germany in 2017 and has been in my ownership since 2020.
Condition at Purchase
- Bodywork completely free of rust-through
- Original sills with characteristic swage lines
- Minor cosmetic flaws: imperfectly repaired sheet metal on front and rear fenders
- Hood not original
- Good but not perfect American-style paintwork
- A metal patch welded beneath the driver's seat
- All cavities rust-free and resealed during restoration
- Interior showed typical UV damage (seats, dashboard, door panels)
Extensive Restoration 2021–2024
The bodywork was intentionally preserved in its original condition. Comprehensive mechanical and interior work was carried out:
Engine & Drivetrain
- Engine fully rebuilt by Jürgen Linse
- Bored out to 1776 cc
- Original carburetor overhauled
- Currently 75 HP – further power upgrade possible
- Underbody oil cooler added
- New transmission
Suspension & Mechanics
- New Koni shock absorbers, tires and brakes
- New fuel tank and fuel lines
- New wiring harness – fully functional
Interior & Soft Top
- Dashboard repainted
- New windshield
- Front and rear seats rebuilt by upholsterer
- Headrests added
- Seat heating installed
- 3-point seat belts retrofitted
- High-quality new fabric soft top by upholsterer – real glass rear window
Current Status
- Fresh German TÜV valid until 4/28
- Oil and filter freshly changed
- Workshop and parts invoices over €30,000 – all original receipts available
- Driven only in fair weather since completion, approx. 1,000 km
- Garage-kept, additionally covered with a fabric cover in winter
Reason for Sale
Due to health reasons, the Karmann is looking for a good home. Viewing and test drive possible by appointment in dry weather.
