Description

An exceptionally rare and highly collectible early ‘Low Light’ Karmann Ghia Convertible, chassis number 2051545, manufactured on 28th August 1958 and delivered new to the Republic of Kongo on 26th September 1958.

Karmann Ghia convertibles entered production at Osnabrück on 1st August 1957, having been unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show the following September. Built in relatively small numbers and essentially hand-finished, these elegant cars have become highly sought-after by collectors.

The earliest convertibles, produced before the styling revisions for the 1960 model year, are affectionately known as ‘Low Lights’, thanks to their distinctive lower-set headlights. These early cars are regarded by enthusiasts as the purest expression of the Karmann Ghia’s beautiful styling and are now exceptionally rare.

It was imported into the USA, and during its time there, it is understood to have benefited from an engine and gearbox rebuild together with a comprehensive mechanical overhaul.

Imported into the UK on 3rd September 2014 by a well-known drag racer, the car subsequently spent time in East Sussex before passing to its next owner, a respected VW and Porsche enthusiast, in July 2022. There have been just three owners in the UK since its importation.

Chassis 2051545 is an older restoration that presents extremely well. The underside is particularly clean and rust-free, while the car’s condition suggests it has been used primarily for ‘high days and holidays’.

During the current custodianship, the car has been further improved with the addition of CoCo Mats, four Koni Classic shock absorbers and an Optima battery. It has also been exceptionally well maintained, with engine oil changes carried out every 1,000 miles and brake fluid and gearbox oil changed at two-year intervals.

Believed to be one of only six or seven ‘Low Light’ Karmann Ghia Convertibles registered in the UK, this represents a genuinely rare opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable and collectible versions of Volkswagen’s iconic sports car. It is also supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
