Description

  • An exceptional early Mk1 GTI, and one of the rare transition cars that bridge the change between the Phase 1 and later Phase 2 models

  • Delivered new to France in February 1980, this left-hand-drive example displays the defining features of the early Phase 1 GTIs — small rear lights, hard-plastic dashboard, and exposed filler cap — combined with the later updates that came in just before the full facelift, including the wrap-around plastic bumpers and five-speed gearbox introduced for 1979/80.

  • The result is a car that captures the original purity of the Mk1 design while incorporating the refinements that followed.

  • Still accompanied by its original book pack, containing early service records and the original order form. Beyond that, little is known until it was purchased from Oldtimerfarm in Belgium in 2024, before being imported and registered in the UK shortly afterwards.

  • While paperwork is limited, the condition speaks for itself. The car presents beautifully throughout — both structurally and cosmetically — and is a clear reflection of long-term care and preservation rather than restoration.

  • We would strongly encourage interested parties to view the car in person, where its originality and quality can be fully appreciated.
