This Golf is special, both in terms of specification - it is a GTS (Gran Turismo Sport) - and in terms of its condition and history. It is difficult to decide where to begin, but given the rarity of the GTS version, it makes sense to explain that first. Enthusiasts may think they are looking at a Golf Mk1 fitted with various period-correct accessories, but nothing could be further from the truth.
The Golf Mk1 GTI needs no introduction, we presume. However, the GTI was a very expensive Golf, and there was a considerable price gap between a well-specified, “dressed-up” Golf and a Golf GTI. Moreover, there was no other truly sporty Golf positioned below the GTI in the price list. There was demand for such a model, and PON, the Dutch importer, decided to fill this gap with the GTS version.
The Golf Mk1 GTS was essentially a standard manual-transmission Golf LX with the lively 1.5-liter engine, which was converted by Dutch dealers into a much sportier GTS. The GTS options were selected by PON and offered as a special package. As a result, the GTS was delivered exclusively in the Netherlands and was available only in Alpine White. These were the final examples of the Golf Mk1 to be produced in this way.
Approximately 2,000 cars in this specification were delivered between late 1983 and early 1984, making it a very rare model, especially considering that only a very limited number are known to survive today. At the time, the price was 22,995 guilders, according to the original flyer that is still present. The flyer lists the standard extras and highlights of the GTS as follows:
• Full set of wide-body fender extensions with integrated front spoiler (from BBS)
• Rear spoiler (roof spoiler from Zender)
• Rally-style grille with dual rectangular headlights (halogen)
• Golf GTS badge on the rear boot lid
• Sporty rally-style striping
• White four-spoke alloy sport wheels, 5.5 J × 13 inch
• Wide 175/70 SR 13 Conti rally tires
• Sport seats with headrests
• New upholstery pattern
• And more
This Golf GTS still retains all the original accessories as delivered and matches exactly the car shown on the flyer. The only exception is that this example has been fitted with a set of lowering springs, not lowering it excessively, but giving it a slightly more attractive stance.
Regarding condition: this GTS is, like all others, an original Dutch car. It has covered only 130,142 km, with NAP confirming a logical mileage. The original and completed service book is also present, showing that the car was first delivered through Autolichtstad B.V. in Eindhoven. The first owner was from Helmond, and maintenance was carried out by Automobielbedrijf Ad Raaymakers in Lieshout.
This GTS has had only five private owners. In mid-2017, the last owner decided to lightly restore and preserve the Golf. The car was repainted in its original color, fitted with a newly produced GTS decal set, the wheels were repainted white with new tires, and the engine was updated with electronic ignition.
In the last photos, the Golf is shown with "period"-correct original ATS wheels. It can be delivered on these wheels if preferred, but given the GTS specification, we would leave it on the original 13-inch wheels, they suit it perfectly.
The Mk1 Golf is the original Golf, the car that defined an entire class. Light, mechanical, intuitive, and surprisingly playful. The GTS version adds just a touch of extra flair, with the right details, the right looks, and, above all, the unique simplicity that made the Mk1 Golf so beloved. Its manual gearbox, smooth petrol engine, and low weight provide a driving experience that is increasingly rare today: direct, honest, and wonderfully analog.
Some cars are so authentic and so well preserved that you instantly know: this is one to be cherished. This October 1983 GTS is exactly that kind of car. Not an over-restored showpiece, but an exceptionally fresh, honest, and beautifully original example, rarely seen nowadays.
The terms “unique, rare, hard to replicate, for collectors” are often thrown around in advertisements—we know, and yes, also here. But in the case of this Golf, it is all genuinely true; where else could you find this combination?
