HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
The Suzuki LJ80 is not just any old small off-roader. It is a compact piece of engineering with the spirit of a mountain goat. At first glance, it almost looks like a toy: a narrow track width, tall and narrow tyres, small mudguards and an upright windscreen. But as soon as you start the engine, you realise that this Suzuki hails from an era when 4x4s weren’t built to impress, but simply to get anywhere. The example we are offering is a much-loved early model, first registered on 28 November 1980. The car was fully restored around 2019, with both its appearance and mechanics thoroughly overhauled. The car comes with numerous technical manuals. Fully roadworthy, the car was imported by us from Italy.

EXTERIOR
Visually, the car is a sight to behold: the attractive beige colour has been repainted and the original alloy wheels are fitted with good-quality Michelin 4x4 tyres. The original bodywork features a canvas roof, which is in good condition and can be opened. This example is in its original condition, unlike many modified examples. Visually, the car is in very good condition with its original components. At the front, above the grille, are attractive Carello spotlights.

INTERIOR
The interior is entirely focused on ease of use and off-road driving. The dashboard has a minimalist design with analogue gauges, simple switches and few luxury features. The seating position is upright and spacious for such a small car, with simple seats and a practical layout. The interior has been restored and is in excellent condition. The seats are upholstered in black imitation leather. The spare wheel is located in the boot.

TECHNICAL
The small 797 cc four-cylinder engine delivers 41 pk and produces an honest, mechanical sound that you hardly ever come across these days. No complicated electronics, no unnecessary luxuries, no frills. Just pure engineering: rigid axles, leaf springs, a transfer box and exceptional lightness. Weighing just over 800 kilos, the LJ80 is lighter than many modern city cars. And yet this little Suzuki comes into its own as soon as the terrain gets tough. On narrow mountain tracks where larger off-road vehicles struggle, the LJ80 makes its way almost effortlessly. It sometimes looks as though it might tip over at any moment, but continues to climb unperturbed. The LJ80 embodies all the charm of the 1970s: drum brakes, sluggish steering and a certain primitiveness. The car has been thoroughly overhauled and drives, brakes and changes gear well. Under the bonnet, too, the car is in excellent condition.

GENERAL
The Suzuki LJ80 is one of the most characterful compact off-road vehicles from the 1970s and represents an important chapter in the history of Suzuki’s 4x4 models. Introduced in 1978 as the successor to the LJ50, the LJ80 was specifically developed as a simple, reliable and affordable off-roader capable of navigating terrain where larger vehicles would get stuck. The LJ80 featured increased power and improvements over its predecessor, the LJ50. Under the small bonnet lies a 797 cc four-cylinder petrol engine producing 41 pk, coupled with a four-wheel drive system featuring low-range gearing, solid axles and leaf springs — technology entirely focused on functionality and off-road capability. Thanks to its light weight of around 800 kilograms, compact dimensions and short overhangs, the LJ80 boasted impressive off-road capability, despite its unassuming appearance. It was sold worldwide and formed the basis for the later development of the legendary Suzuki Samurai. With its simple engineering, distinctive design, removable canvas roof and pure driving experience, the LJ80 represents an era when off-road vehicles were still pure, mechanical and adventurous. Today, it is increasingly prized by enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate its unique combination of charm, reliability and authentic off-road capabilities.
