Description
The ‘Series’ Sunbeam Alpine was introduced by Rootes in 1959, using the then current Hillman Minx as the basis for a 2-seater sports convertible. The styling was aimed squarely at the US market and it was indeed designed by a pair of Americans, resulting in the prominent US-style fins at the rear of the car but a low front end to enhance the impression of speed, even at a standstill.
The Alpine underwent four subsequent revisions until production in ended in 1968 and this car, a Series III model, is the rarest production Alpine, having been made for only a little over 12 months in 1963 and 1964, with less than 6,000 believed built.
This Alpine, an original LHD export model, was imported to Guernsey in 1992 at which time a former owner undertook considerable restoration work, including engine, gearbox and suspension rebuilds; bodywork repairs and new paintwork. The interior trim was also refreshed.
The original Series III fitment 1600 cc engine has been replaced with a later, stronger, 5-bearing 1725 cc engine and other engine modifications include a twin choke Weber carburettor, tubular exhaust manifold and fitment of an oil cooler. The Alpine runs on uprated alloy wheels – with the original 13” diameter but wider at front and rear, running 175/70x13 & 205/60x13 tyres respectively.
The bodywork is in good, solid condition and the underside shows little sign of corrosion. The bright red paintwork is largely unmarked but does show some signs of regular use. The hood is in good condition. The original chrome bumpers have been removed and are not available with the car.
Seats, carpets and door cards are all in good condition. The dash has some patination but is not split or torn. An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel has been fitted.
This lightly modified Alpine is overall in a good condition, having been cherished by an enthusiastic owner who has looked after it well and maintained the car as required. It has been used in local club events, including occasional sprints and hill climbs, and also seen regular use in France, touring Brittany. It drives very well and is now ready for a new owner to enjoy in a similar fashion.
The car is currently Guernsey registered and we can assist with shipping and importing processes if required. We can ship worldwide.
