Extensive cavity preservation using Mike Sanders anti-corrosion grease was subsequently carried out to ensure long-term protection of the vehicle's structure.
Particular attention was also paid to authenticity in the details. All brackets, bolts, and mounting hardware were restored to original specifications, yellow-zinc plated, and reinstalled with corrosion protection. In total, more than 2,000 individual components, representing approximately 350 different parts positions, were replaced.
The interior reflects the high standards applied throughout the restoration. The rare and extensive factory equipment has been consistently preserved and thoughtfully enhanced over the years. Features include wood trim, heated seats, and a retrofitted air-conditioning system using original components, including the correct air-conditioning engine hood.
In addition, the instruments, switches, and electrical connectors were refurbished. The wood trim elements were refinished, and all floor and luggage compartment mats were custom-made. The result is an interior that authentically conveys the character of a premium luxury off-roader from the 1980s.
At the heart of the vehicle is the renowned M110 inline-six engine. At approximately 70,600 kilometers, the engine was completely rebuilt in 2024. As part of this process, high-compression pistons and camshafts from the more powerful M110.987 variant were installed. The result is an output of approximately 170 hp while maintaining near-factory drivability and excellent everyday usability.
Prior to this, the entire fuel system, including the K-Jetronic injection system, was comprehensively overhauled. The fuel pump, filters, and fuel accumulator were replaced. A new three-row radiator was installed to improve cooling performance. The suspension received Bilstein B6 dampers and new springs, while all relevant bushings were renewed.
The braking system was completely rebuilt in 2021. In 2023, the automatic transmission was professionally overhauled, resulting in particularly smooth gear changes.
The vehicle’s history is largely documented back to 1988. Included with the vehicle are the original data card and an Austrian dealer price list from 1988. The original purchase price of 848,364 Austrian Schillings clearly demonstrates the market segment occupied by a fully equipped 280 GE at the time.
Since being acquired by the current owner in December 2016, every significant measure has been documented. The work reflects a clear philosophy: not cosmetic refurbishment, but sustainable technical and structural improvement.
The vehicle has held Austrian historic registration since 2022 and has been officially registered with FIVA since 2025. Maintenance has been carried out with exceptional diligence. Engine oil changes were performed regularly at intervals of approximately 7,500 kilometers. Brake fluid and the operating fluids for the differential locks were also replaced according to schedule.
Matching numbers for the engine, transmission, and bodywork underline the authenticity of this example. Combined with the extensive restoration documentation, the result is an exceptionally complete and coherent vehicle history.
