Description

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III is widely regarded as the ultimate development of the celebrated Silver Cloud range. Introduced in 1962, it combined the marque's exceptionally smooth 6.2 litre V8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission with reduced weight, improved performance and the distinctive twin-headlamp frontal treatment that defined the final generation.

While the majority received Rolls-Royce's standard factory coachwork, a very small number of chassis were entrusted to specialist coachbuilders. This exceptional 1964 example, chassis number SFU581, carries elegant four-door Sports Saloon coachwork by Mulliner Park Ward. Often informally associated with the evocative 'Flying Spur' name, this rare design is distinguished by its lower roofline, restrained proportions and dramatically canted twin headlamps.

Finished in rich Royal Garnet, the sweeping coachwork is complemented by a beautifully appointed Magnolia leather interior piped in Chinese Red. The combination is both distinctive and sophisticated, perfectly suiting the car's more sporting interpretation of traditional Rolls-Royce luxury. The odometer currently indicates approximately 50,400 miles.

The quality of this Silver Cloud III was formally recognised in 2023 when it won the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club Scottish Section's Charles Palmer Trophy Concours d'Elegance. Its previous custodian nevertheless continued to invest significantly in the car, commissioning approximately £3,500 of preparatory attention from Classic Restorations (Scotland) Ltd in September 2025. A service costing approximately £2,800 was completed during the same month, followed by further specialist attention amounting to approximately £2,200 in October.

These more recent works form part of an impressive record of specialist maintenance and expenditure. In 2021, the car benefited from work by Fiennes Restoration totalling almost £16,000. The history file also contains invoices from Ristes Motor Company for approximately £35,500 in 2013 and £7,200 in 2010, together with evidence of earlier attention from respected specialists including RO-BEN Cars, Alan Dyson Restorations and Hofmann's of Henley.

The accompanying documentation includes a detailed history book recording the car's construction and earlier life. It is understood to have spent a period in the United States and was originally finished in Ming Blue before being refinished in its present Royal Garnet sometime after 1987.

Its interior demonstrates the extraordinary attention to detail for which Mulliner Park Ward became renowned. In addition to the Magnolia leather upholstery and extensive walnut veneers, the car was specified with factory air-conditioning, electric windows, tinted glass, a leather headlining, tachometer, black nickel air vents, twin rear speakers and a manually wound Swiss clock. A slide-out front picnic tray incorporating a double-width ashtray provides a further charming example of its bespoke craftsmanship, while full-width Easirider wool overmats complete the cabin.

Powered by Rolls-Royce's wonderfully smooth 6,230cc V8 engine and fitted with a four-speed automatic transmission, the car is reported to start readily and deliver the quiet, effortless performance expected of the marque. It has previously been used to attend Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club events throughout Scotland and has reportedly proved a capable and refined long-distance touring car.

Few post-war Rolls-Royces combine such rarity, elegance and usability. With its dramatic Mulliner Park Ward coachwork, concours-winning credentials, excellent factory specification, modest indicated mileage and extensive record of significant specialist expenditure, this Silver Cloud III represents an enticing opportunity to acquire one of the marque's most glamorous coachbuilt motor cars.
