Description

The Porsche 911 964 represents one of the most compelling chapters in Stuttgart’s storied history. A car that perfectly bridges the analogue purity of the classic air-cooled era with meaningful modern engineering.

Introduced at the close of the 1980s, the 964 Carrera retained the unmistakable silhouette that defines the 911, yet beneath its familiar form lay an all-new platform. Power comes from the evocative 3.6-litre air-cooled flat-six, delivering a distinctive blend of mechanical character, torque-rich performance and an unmistakable soundtrack that modern cars can only emulate. Whether specified with rear-wheel drive or Carrera 4 all-wheel drive, as in this example, the 964 brought newfound usability and confidence without diluting the essence of the 911.

Subtle design evolutions such as integrated bumpers, refined aerodynamics and the now-iconic electrically deployed rear spoiler, give the 964 a purposeful stance, while the cabin strikes a careful balance between classic Porsche simplicity and improved comfort. Power steering, ABS and coil-spring suspension marked a significant technical leap forward, making the 964 Carrera as rewarding on a fast road as it is composed on longer journeys.

Hilton & Moss are pleased to present this fantastic example, first registered in April 1990. This 964 is fresh from a full external respray by the Hilton & Moss team. Although a fine example already, the previous keeper operated with a ‘no expense spared’ attitude and wanted to ensure this 911 looked better than when it left the factory. The client commissioned a complete ‘panel off’ respray correcting any previous works that had been completed over the last 35 years of the car’s life. Following on from the variety of high end restomods already completed on the vehicle it was decided that the car would be finished in the premium colour of Porsche Basalt Black, a modern colour that carries real depth with an elegant metallic fleck.

During the reassembly of the car, all satin black trims were restored and painted and all clips, trims and rubbers replaced to ensure this 911 looks its very best. New screen rubbers went in alongside a brand-new front windscreen with new kick trims and finishing strips to add the finishing touch. Post paintwork, the car was subject to a detailed mechanical inspection and programme of works to rectify any noted defects. The suspension and mechanicals received a variety of new bushes, gaiters and perishable components - the full invoice of works is detailed in the cars folders.

Upon completion of the restoration work all of the undertrays and wheel arch liners were removed for deep cleaning. The underside and arches were then professionally ice-blasted removing years of road dirt before a full cavity wax was completed before reassembly.

As can be clearly seen, this Porsche benefits from an extensive list of upgrades and changes, the full list of which is available upon request. Notable highlights however include:

- Etta Betta Turbo wheels, with Radinox polished lips and gold hardware
- KW Variant 3 suspension featuring a ClubSport spring set up
- Bottom end engine rebuild in 2022, including replacement clutch and flywheel
- Full Cup exhaust system (The original exhaust will also be included)
- RS smoothed front bumper
- Half show cage fitted, in Ruby Stone Red
- Recaro Pole Position front seats, with rear seat delete
- Custom door panels with RS door pulls and pinstripe Porsche logo
- Tachometer replaced in Ruby Stone Red with hand painted Carrera logo in black
- Singer gear knob
- New headlamps with built-in LED internals and clear lenses
- New rear light clusters and centre panel

Additional work carried out on the car includes a replacement A/C condenser, nearside and offside heater pipes in footwells, motor mixing flap, and resistor/fan A/C. Furthermore, the 964s double ignition distributor, known for its failing drive belt, has been totally rebuilt with new parts and a new belt to ensure optimal future performance. An involved and expensive, yet essential job for the model to ensure reliability moving forward.

With the comprehensive mechanical work completed, alongside a high-end respray, this Porsche catches the eye like no other and will turn heads at every opportunity.

Today, the 964 Carrera is widely regarded as a connoisseur’s choice. Beautifully engineered, richly analogue and increasingly collectible. It offers the tactility and charm enthusiasts crave, combined with the robustness and usability that define Porsche’s enduring appeal. A true modern classic, and one of the most satisfying 911s ever built.
