In 1971, the R107 was introduced, featuring a new design and safety features that would be seen in subsequent Mercedes-Benz models. For the first time, V8 engines were installed in the SL-Class. With production from 1971 to 1989, the R107 was one of the few longest-produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The R107 received a very minor update in 1972 with new rubber-bezeled exterior mirrors from the W116, and a major update in 1985 for the 1986 model year. The engine options were updated in 1980 for the 1981 model year with new aluminum V8 engines from the W126 S-Class that had been introduced in 1979, while the 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine was carried over. It was updated again in 1985 for the 1986 model year with a new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine from the W124 and enlarged 4.2- and 5.5-liter V8 engines, while the 5.0-liter V8 engine was carried over.
The R107 received its first update in 1985 with a deeper front air dam, a revised brake system with larger discs and four-piston calipers, a driver's side airbag (standard for the U.S. market and an extra-cost option for the European market), and, for the European market, a catalytic converter option. The 5 mph bumpers and the four round, mounted headlamps on the U.S. models remained unchanged despite revised U.S. FMVSS regulations that allowed 4.5 mph bumpers and close-fitting headlamps beginning with the 1982 and 1983 model years, respectively. The U.S. model received the third brake light, mounted on the trunk, in 1986. The 560 SL was only sold in the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia.
The car presented here is a USA delivery. It is in dark grey metallic with a grey leather interior. As you can see, this car is still in perfect condition, only some small cracks in the centre console. It has also only driven 78,848 miles and is unrestored. Furthermore, the car is still in an unmolested condition and can therefore still be Europeanised. The engine runs fantastic and it steers, brakes and shifts as it should. We also have a Carfax report for this car, where you can see that this is an honest car.
