1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda
Description
This beautifully presented Mercedes Benz 280SL Automatic is a UK Home Market car first registered on the 21st December 1970. APP 65J comes with an extensive history file to include documentation detailing a bare shell restoration carried out by Mercedes Benz experts Roger Edward’s Ltd in 1996. The rebuild was commissioned by the owner of a Kings Road, London PR Company who demanded the very highest of standards. Photos and paperwork confirm the Pagoda was taken back to a bare shell and rebuilt from the ground up. The shell was rebuilt to produce a rust free body, it was lead loaded as required and then prepared for a full bare metal re-paint. The car was fully re-chromed, rubbers and trims renewed and the upholstery re-trimmed to an exceptional standard. The hard top was re-furbished and a new soft top fitted.
Mechanically the car was totally renewed with a rebuilt engine, rebuilt gearbox, new stainless steel exhaust system, rebuilt fuel injection system, rebuilt power steering, fuel system, heating system and rebuilt front and rear axle assemblies. King pins and bushes were renewed and the suspension completely rebuilt, as was the braking system. The SL was fitted with a compete new wiring loom, and all instruments refurbished. Since completion of the rebuild the Pagoda has covered 19,000 miles.
Restorer Roger Edward's maintained the Pagoda throughout the 2000's and in 2012 the most recent owner purchased the car. Since then APP 65J has covered 6000 miles and has been maintained in the North East of England. The Mercedes Benz has proven a perfectly reliable, strong and usable example that has toured through Portugal, Spain and even queued through central Madrid with golf clubs on board! In order to keep the 280SL looking sharp, it was treated to a full re-paint and re-finish in 2024. APP 65J as result arrives with us in beautiful condition with an exceptionally straight, sharp body and structurally outstanding underside. Chrome work gleams, the paint finish is excellent and the upholstery has beautifully aged 29 years on since its re-trim.
On the road this Pagoda is a true delight. It drives perfectly with a super fit, strong engine holding excellent oil pressure. The automatic gearbox is set up perfectly and changes are smooth, steering is responsive and light, and the brakes and road holding feel excellent. All electrics work, all gauges and dials work perfectly and the car is a true joy on the open road. With both hard top and soft tops the Pagoda can handle all year round use, and this true classic icon will not disappoint if looking for a well prepared, superbly presented usable example.
