History

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 280 SL in 1967, it marked the final and most refined evolution of the legendary W113 “Pagoda” series. Designed under the direction of Paul Bracq, the W113 blended modern styling with robust engineering, creating a car that was equal parts sports car and luxury grand tourer. Its nickname, “Pagoda,” came from the distinctive concave shape of the optional removable hardtop, which resembled the curved rooflines of Asian temples. This elegant design element, combined with balanced proportions and clean, angular lines, made the model instantly recognizable and one of the most stylish cars of its era.

The 280 SL brought meaningful improvements over its predecessors, cementing its place as the most desirable of the Pagoda line. The key advancement was under the hood: the new 2.8-litre inline-six engine delivered 170 hp, offering a smoother power band and stronger mid-range torque, making the 280 SL both a relaxed tourer and a capable high-speed performer. The model retained the excellent balance of comfort and sportiness that defined the W113, with independent suspension, power-assisted disc brakes all around, and precise steering that gave the car a modern feel for its time.

Produced from 1967 through 1971, the 280 SL became the most popular of the Pagodas, with 23,885 examples built. Its blend of robust engineering, elegant Paul Bracq design, and improved drivability won over enthusiasts worldwide, from European boulevards to American freeways.

Period advertising emphasized Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for durability and refinement, positioning the 280 SL as not just a sports car, but a grand touring machine capable of covering long distances in style and comfort. The availability of both manual and automatic transmissions, as well as the trademark removable “Pagoda” hardtop, ensured broad appeal to drivers seeking versatility and elegance in equal measure.

Today, the 280 SL is widely considered the pinnacle of the W113 series, offering the best blend of performance, usability, and collectibility within the iconic Pagoda range.

Our Car
This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda is a particularly special example, finished in an elegant silver exterior that perfectly complements the timeless Paul Bracq design. Believed to be among the very first 100 units produced, it was originally delivered in 1967 to its first owner in Geneva, Switzerland, and has since enjoyed a privileged life.

The car benefits from a meticulous restoration carried out to Pebble Beach standards, ensuring exceptional attention to detail and a presentation that is as striking as it is authentic. During the restoration, a number of discreet and well-considered upgrades were added, designed to enhance the car’s dynamic abilities while preserving its classic character. Among these are a 5-speed gearbox, factory limited-slip differential, and alloy wheels, which together bring out the sportier side of the Pagoda while maintaining effortless drivability.

Meticulously maintained by its last owner, this 280 SL has also benefitted from an engine rebuild performed by a respected Mercedes specialist, the same workshop that has cared for the car and kept it regularly serviced over the last eight years.

Adding to its appeal, the car comes with its original Mercedes brochures, complete service manuals in optimum condition, and a full maintenance history, underlining the care it has received throughout its life. With many subtle upgrades and plenty of stories to tell, it represents not just a classic automobile, but a piece of living history.

On the road, this 280 SL truly shines. The sonorous Mercedes straight-six delivers a smooth yet engaging soundtrack, perfectly matched to the car’s balance and precision. With the top down, it becomes the ideal companion for open-air touring, combining refined cruising comfort with the spirited performance of a grand tourer.

This unique Pagoda captures the best of both worlds: the elegance and collectibility of an early, rare production car, paired with the enhanced driving pleasure that makes every journey an occasion.
