Description

Model year: 2021
Empty weight: 1.180 kg
Registration number: DM-09-63

Our Mercedes-Benz 190SL was first registered on the 5th July 1957. This example left the factory in Germany in the favourite combination of a metallic silver exterior with a red leather interior trim. Truly a classic combination.

It was first registered in the Netherlands on the 19th April 1996. It has only clocked up 86,801 km. The document file contains a lot of invoices dating from 2001 to 2020 for the extensive work carried out by a Mercedes-Benz expert. Inside and out, including the brightwork, it has been beautifully looked after. The hood is easy to use and closes securely. The controls and instruments are all in a good state of repair and in good working order.

Every now and again you spot a car on the roads you normally would expect to see in a museum. This Mercedes-Benz 190SL falls into this category. Truly a car with sex-appeal.

The 190SL was introduced in 1955 as a more affordable alternative to the pricey 300SL. Whilst the 190SL shared a lot of technical details with its more expensive brother, it was built on a W121 sedan

platform. Under the bonnet a 1.9 litre 4-cylinder engine produced 105 PS, with the factory quoting a top of 171km/hr. Later in the mid-sixties both the 190 and the 300 SL found their successor in the 230SL.

Between 1955 and 1963 25,881 190SL’s were produced and clearly not all of them have survived. You certainly do not see them driving around every day, which can only add to the 190SL’s allure.

The first studies for an open two or four seater version of the 180 Ponton were carried out in 1953. The Mercedes-Benz 190SL is technically based on the W121 series sedan, the so-called “Ponton” model. To distinguish the 190SL from the 190 Ponton, B2, signifying the second series, was added the W121 factory code. The correct factory code is therefore: W121B2. Complicating matters moreover is the use of the later introduced “R” for roadster abbreviation, so sometimes the 190SL is known as a R121. The 190SL only came with the 1.9 straight-4 cylinder petrol engine (M121) with twin Solex carburettors producing as the factory quotes 77kW (105Ps). In other words this is a wonderful and very well maintained 190SL, proving its merits when you take place behind the steering wheel with its supple engine and gearbox that works as good as a new one.
