1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet
1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet
Description
This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a U.K. Home Market RHD Mercedes Benz 280SE Cabriolet that comes with extensive history to include Mercedes Benz Club paperwork suggesting the mileage of 35848 is likely to be genuine from new. The 280SE Cabriolet is without doubt a rare car with a short manufacture period from introduction in February 1968 to May 1971.
Finished from new in Off White 717 with Dark Blue 235 leather with additional specification items to include air-conditioning, bench seat stop, Ivory steering wheel, Halogen headlamps, tinted windows, harder suspension (springs/shock absorbers) and engine undershield, this is an incredibly early example, chassis number 57 that was built in January 1968 and supplied new to the Chairman of the Civil Engineering Group, John Murphy who was believed to have purchased the car for use in Ireland. Two years later in 1970 the car was sold to the owner of a Town and Country Club in Kilburn, London who kept the car for many years with his private plate BAD 1 on the car. The Mercedes Benz was taken to Ireland on its owners retirement and returned to the UK in 1985 with 25,000 miles recorded.
From 1987 to 1989 the Mercedes was subject of a bare metal re-paint with photo record to show no signs of major corosion. A 1993 Club valuation describes the car in impressive condition throughout and with steady use throughout the 1990's and 2000's, the Mercedes Benz had covered 34663 miles by 2012 when having a program of mechanical work to include rectifying various oil leaks and fitting new old stock steering knuckles, control arm mounts and swivel arms. The Mercedes Benz was on the road MOT tested in 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017 with the mileage then 35632.
This remarkably original car has been in the same ownership since 2012 and was used fairly regularly until 2022. The Mercedes then went to a specialist and some of the interior was dismantled and requires re-fit. With its time off the road, it will also require the brakes re-commissioning and a light program of mechanical work. We are now tasked with finding a new home for this rare, incredibly interesting car and are happy to discuss options of either selling the car as it is, or agreeing a ‘completed' price with the car back on the road and built up. We welcome enquiries.
Please note an appointment is required to view this car as it is currently in our storage facility off the main showroom site.
