Widely regarded as one of the finest post-war grand tourers, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupé combined timeless Paul Bracq styling with the marque’s first new-generation V8 engine. Built for less than two years, with just 3,270 examples produced, it represents the pinnacle of hand-built Mercedes craftsmanship.

This example was delivered new in Germany in July 1970 and remained there for much of its life, including long-term single-family ownership. Between 2018 and 2020, it underwent a no-expense-spared, bare-shell restoration to concours standards. The body was stripped, repaired, and refinished in an elegant period-correct metallic hue, complemented by renewed chrome, replated brightwork, and refinished fastenings. Inside, the cabin was retrimmed in high-quality materials, with restored veneers and instruments presenting as new.

Mechanically, the car is equally impressive. Its 3.5-litre V8 was overhauled by respected Mercedes specialist Peter Finkemeyer, with a complete rebuild including pistons, bearings, gaskets, and valve seats. Suspension, steering, braking, and fuel systems were all rebuilt, while the gearbox and rear axle were serviced and resealed. The result is a car that not only looks spectacular but also drives with the refinement and vigor expected of a freshly delivered 280 SE 3.5.

Imported to the UK in 2021, the car has since been kept in a climate-controlled storage bubble, professionally detailed, and protected with Topaz Paint Protection Film under a 10-year warranty. Today, it presents in near-concours condition, with immaculate panel fit, flawless paintwork, and spotless underbody.
