The Daimler-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim witnessed a historic moment on 24 February 1961, when the 220 SEb Coupe was unveiled, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the motor car. This model stood out as a pinnacle of elegance and design in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

The 220 SEb Coupe was derived from the 220 SEb sedan, which debuted in August 1959 as part of the model series 111. While it shared the same chassis and wheelbase as the sedan, the coupe was designed as a full-fledged four-seater. It featured the same engine and transmission options as the sedan. Still, it introduced a groundbreaking technical feature: the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car equipped with disc brakes on the front wheels, enhancing braking performance and safety. The signature tailfins of the sedan were toned down in the coupe, replaced by a more refined design, characteristic of the evolving Mercedes-Benz design language.

The 220 SEb Coupe featured In September 1969, the 280 SE 3.5 Coupe debuted, boasting a new 3.5-liter V8 engine with 200 horsepower. This more powerful engine offered remarkable smoothness and quietness, elevating the coupe's performance to near sports car levels. Along with introducing the new engine, minor external modifications were made to the car, including a wider, lower radiator grille, a lower hood, and modified bumpers with rubber strips, in line with the changes made to the sedans.

This 1970 280 SE 3.5 Coupe was sold new in Hannover according to its original Fahrzeugbrief. Passing through a chain of owners, it was purchased by the current owner over 40 years ago in 1982. During its long-term ownership, the car has received continual service through maintenance and restorative work. This included refinishing the body as originally specified in Grey Blue Metallic (906). Inside, original Black Roser leather can still be found, with the seats being discreetly updated with heating elements. In-car entertainment has been enhanced with dual Phillips speakers behind the rear seats. A multi-trumpet air horn has been mounted behind the radiator grille, complimenting the sporty "bundt" alloy wheels. The optional electric sunroof creates a near-convertible experience in this pillarless coupe.

Today, after over 40 years with a single caretaker, this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupe remains an excellent example of the top-of-the-line personal luxury car from Mercedes-Benz. It would be an excellent addition to any collection looking for what many consider to be the last hand-built Mercedes-Benz.

The car can be viewed at our premises in Germany, 33415 Verl at any time by arrangement. A lifting platform is available for this purpose.
