After Maserati came with the Biturbo in 1981, it would only be a matter of time before the Italian manufacturer offered us an open version. Zagato was given the go-ahead to design and build the roofless Biturbo and in 1984 Maserati was able to proudly present the Spyder. Over the years small modifications were made before a larger one in 1989 in line with saloon Biturbos. The bumpers became integrated, the grill rounded and the engine size increased to 2.8 litre. Water-cooled turbo’s and intercoolers made their entrance improving the six-cylinder’s reliability.

Our 1990 Biturbo is precisely one of the new variants. It comes in a very stylish finish of navy blue with natural half leather and half Alcantara. This model has a 2.8 litre twin blower V6 producing 225 hp making it a proper sportscar. The first owner to enjoy all this Italian temperament lived in France where this Spyder spent the first five years of its life, before moving south to Spain.

The effect of this is of course a Biturbo Spyder Zagato that never experienced a harsh winter and never knew the like of salt gritting. With under 100,000 km on the clock the car has not been used a lot and then only in fine weather to make undoubtably glorious trips over Spain’s most beautiful roads. If you think that all that Spanish sun affected the paintwork, you will be pleased to see it has been resprayed in the original colour. The undamaged deep lustre the Spyder is a joy to behold. You have every right to expect the alignment is fine and the doors, bonnet and boot lid all close correctly with a relatively modern car and that is very much the case with our car. The wheels have no scratches and the good quality tyres are correctly sized.

Moving inside we see the fine, original condition. The unmissable Maserati instrument panel with large central trident in between blue gauges being totally intact as is the rest of the dashboard, centre console and door cards. The seats look quite good, although the Alcantara is starting to show its age. No tears or damage but the drivers outer bolster is a little rough and has been discoloured by the drivers clothes. The seats are very comfortable and supportive, the lovely wooden steering wheel invites you to travel to the car’s country of birth, Italy. It must be an ultimate joy to travel in this Spyder whether with the fully functioning hood is up or down.

Driving the Biturbo is pure pleasure. The continuous light whistling sound of whirling turbos, the direct feel of the steering and the stylish interior permanently remind you are in a special classic: the Biturbo is anything but colourless. This one drives perfectly with its healthy engine and gearbox. Brakes and suspension all work as Maserati ever intended it to do.

Because of the Maserati was not being used a lot, the car changed hands and is can now be found in our collection.
