History

A masterful blend of prewar elegance and postwar resilience, the 1955 EMW 327 Sport Cabriolet was produced at the Eisenach factory in East Germany after WWII, during a period of Soviet administration. It represents a fascinating chapter of German automotive history, when BMW’s prewar legacy was carried on under the EMW (Eisenacher Motorenwerk) brand.

This example is finished in an attractive combination of dark blue and ivory with a brown leather interior. While its earliest history is not documented, records begin with a Belgian inspection certificate from 1976. Between 1986 and 1993, the car received consistent maintenance, including brake and suspension servicing, oil changes, and repairs to the window mechanisms.

In the early 2000s, the car underwent a comprehensive rotisserie restoration, during which the body was fully stripped and refinished to a very high standard. The engine was completely rebuilt, with photographic evidence included in the car’s history file. The quality of the restoration was further underlined by coverage in a magazine feature article.

In 2015, the EMW was imported into the United States, where it joined a prominent collection of German automobiles. As a refined evolution of the original BMW 327, this EMW Cabriolet combines streamlined design, advanced engineering, and timeless appeal—making it one of the most distinctive postwar German cabriolets.
