De Tomaso Pantera from 1972 tells the story of a true, pure sports car from an era when character and engineering went hand in hand. It is a project car, but one with an exceptionally strong foundation and a history that adds directly to its appeal.
The car was delivered new in the dry climate of Arizona, where it was preserved for many years. Around seven years ago, it was moved to the East Coast, where it has since been stored indoors in a garage. Originally intended as a restoration project, which was never started, it has remained remarkably original.
The body is one of the strongest aspects of this car. The underside still shows a factory-like coating, and the overall condition reflects careful preservation over the years. The body panels fit nicely with clean, even gaps, and the car presents itself as a very solid and honest example, making it an excellent base for restoration.
From a technical standpoint, there is already a solid starting point. The engine runs, there is brake pressure, and the car shifts smoothly through all gears in the ZF 5-speed gearbox. The clutch cylinder currently has no pressure, which means the car is not yet drivable, but this is a relatively straightforward issue to address.
The interior is original and complements the character of the car perfectly. It shows its age in a way that enhances the authenticity and charm of this classic sports car.
The Pantera itself is a unique model with a fascinating background. Developed by the Italian De Tomaso in collaboration with the Ford Motor Company, it combines Italian styling with the power and reliability of an American V8 engine. This makes the car not only exciting to drive, but also appealing to own and maintain.
Today, values of these early sports cars are clearly on the rise, and well-preserved, original examples like this one are becoming increasingly desirable. This Pantera represents not only an exciting project, but also an opportunity to bring a piece of automotive history back to life.
