When Citroen presented the SM at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, it was the result of many years of development work. An aerodynamic and avant-garde design by in-house designer Robert Opron, optimized and enhanced hydropneumatic suspension, and a compact, powerful engine developed by Maserati, in which Citroen held a stake, were brought together.
The result was a work of art without equal, which was not only fast at 220 km/h but also extremely comfortable thanks to its sophisticated suspension, and was aptly nicknamed the “flying sofa”.
The following year, Henri Chapron, who had built more than 1,000 convertibles and numerous coupes for the DS, presented the SM as a convertible.
