Description

The 1989 BMW Z1 is an iconic roadster produced in limited numbers, with only about 8,000 units manufactured between 1989 and 1991. It was the first model in BMW's Z series (Z stands for "Zukunft," meaning "future" in German), and it features some innovative design and engineering choices that made it stand out.

It is best known for its retractable doors. Instead of swinging outward like traditional car doors, the doors slide vertically down into the body. This gives the car a futuristic and exotic appeal, even by today's standards. Drivers can even drive the car with the doors down, creating an open-air experience that feels more like a go-kart.

The Z1 was built on a modified version of the BMW E30 3 Series chassis, though it featured significant changes to make it more of a sports car. It has a multilink rear suspension, an innovation that helped improve its handling and grip, especially on twisty roads.

This BMW is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-six engine (the M20B25), which produced 168 horsepower and 164 lb-ft of torque. It came with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Although its performance figures were modest by modern standards, with a 0-60 mph time of about 8 seconds and a top speed of around 140 mph (225 km/h), the car’s lightweight (around 2,900 pounds or 1,250 kg) made it feel nimble and quick. With its lightweight construction, low center of gravity, and rear-wheel-drive setup, it offers a responsive and fun driving experience, especially on twisty backroads. The power delivery is linear, and while the car isn’t blisteringly fast, it feels lively due to its relatively low weight and well-tuned chassis. The manual transmission provides an engaging experience, though some might find the car underpowered compared to more modern sports cars.

The ride quality is firm, as expected in a sports car, but not overly harsh. It balances sportiness with enough comfort for leisurely weekend drives. The Z1 offers a true driver's experience, with no electronic interference between you and the road. Overall, the 1989 BMW Z1 is a rare and fascinating car that delivers a unique driving experience. It embodies the spirit of open-top motoring with a focus on driver engagement and the fun of the journey rather than pure performance.

The car listed here is a handsome, early production example of the rare and distinctive modern classic sports car. This left hand drive example has completed 61,000 miles from new. The exterior paintwork is finished in the timeless hue of Dream Black which is in lovely condition, and so is the black convertible soft top. The interior is trimmed in the original grey and camouflage-patterned leather which compliments the exterior really well. Built in April 1989, this Z1 was privately imported into the UK and registered with the DVLA in August 1989.

Factory-fitted equipment includes electrically operated windows and doors, basic heating and ventilation controls, and a rare Z1-branded radio/cassette player. It also rides on the correct set of 16 inch alloy wheels. The original spare wheel, toolkit, warning triangle, locking wheel nuts, and spare keys also come with the car.

Accompanying the sale is an extensive amount of paperwork including old MoT receipts, previous invoices, reprinted handbook, an original Z1 press release and more.

Recent service work includes a timing belt change (less than a thousand miles ago) and a fresh oil service. The overall condition of the car is superb and it drives faultlessly. This early production Z1 would make a fine addition to any collection, and an engaging companion for weekend drives, particularly with its signature doors lowered for ultimate open-air experience.
