The BMW 8 Series E31 marked a bold step forward for BMW when development began in the mid-1980s. Conceived as a technological flagship to surpass the earlier E24 6 Series, it debuted at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show showcasing cutting-edge engineering and design. Developed at a cost of over 1.5 billion Deutsche Marks, the 8 Series was one of the first production cars to be designed using advanced CAD systems, resulting in a sleek, aerodynamic body with a drag coefficient of just 0.29. It also introduced innovations such as electronic drive-by-wire throttle and, in V12 form, the first pairing of a V12 engine with a six-speed manual gearbox in a road car.
