BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke and its headquarters are in Munich. In 1912 Karl Friedrich Rapp started building aircraft engines under the name Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH. On March 7, 1916, he sold the company to Gustav Otto and the new company was given the name Bayerische Flugzeug Werke. BMW considers this date to be the official founding date. In 2016, the group celebrated its 100th anniversary. The development of engines for aircraft and motorcycles was the "core" business of BMW in the early years
In 1923 BMW started the production of the first motorcycle the BMW R32. In 1928, BMW took over the Eisenach AG vehicle factory, where the small Dixi was built. This was the start for Bayerische Motoren Werke as a car manufacturer. In March 1929, BMW produced the first car: the BMW 3/15 (the 15 referred to the number of horsepower), a derivative of the Austin Seven.
BMW's first real own cars were produced from 1933. These were more advanced six-cylinder sports cars and sedans. Especially the 327 sedan and 328 roadster, fast two-liter cars, were very advanced for their time. Partly thanks to these models, BMW got a name as a builder of sporty cars.
BMW continued to produce mostly motorcycles in the 50s – 60s and with success!. With the building of cars they also went with varying degrees of success. The big breakthrough was in 1961 with the introduction of BMW 1500 "Neue Klasse" designed by Michelotti. From 1962 – 1972 it was produced in various versions (1500, 1600, 1800, 2000 and 2000c).
The BMW 02 series was the middle class of BMW and was derived from the BMW "Neue Klasse" but had 2 instead of 4 doors (1502,1600-2,1602,1802 and 2002)
In this series and also in the later models, the Hofmeister kink and "kidneys" in the grille is a characteristic style element. Another feature is the rear-wheel drive. Since the seventies BMW has been active in racing and has achieved many successes. The BMW brand stands for quality, is leading and innovative. The brand is indispensable and continues to produce cars in the higher segment. The credo is not for nothing "Freude am Wagen - Freude am Fahren!"
