Description

The 1964 Mini 848cc is a defining example of British automotive ingenuity, blending simplicity, efficiency, and charm into a compact design that re-shaped small car engineering. Powered by an 848cc inline-four engine, it produced modest horsepower yet delivered lively performance thanks to its lightweight construction and front-wheel-drive layout. This configuration, revolutionary at the time, maximised interior space while maintaining a minimal footprint, making it ideal for crowded urban streets. Its transverse engine placement allowed for remarkable cabin room relative to its size, comfortably seating four passengers. The Mini's suspension system, featuring rubber cones instead of traditional springs, contributed to its famously nimble handling. Drivers often praised its go-kart-like responsiveness, which made even everyday driving feel engaging. Visually, the Mini carried a clean, functional design. Sliding windows, external door hinges, and minimal overhangs reflected its practical roots, while its friendly appearance gave it enduring character. Inside, the centrally mounted speedometer and simple controls emphasised efficiency over luxury.

Originally registered on 18th September 1964, this Mini presents in superb order throughout. It was restored by Minispeed in Byfleet in April 2013, with an invoice totalling £20,662. Prior to this work, the car had not moved for 26 years, hence the need for the restoration. Work carried out by Minispeed included new floor, sills, front wings, boot lid, new door skin on the passenger door and repainting in the original colour. An additional invoice from Minispeed was issued later in 2013 confirming a new rear subframe was fitted along with new wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake pipes, fuel pump, track rod ends, water pump, with work totalling £5,337. This being an early example has the long gear lever and starter button on the floor. Showing only two former keepers on the V5 registration document, this 848cc Mini represents the original spirit of this 60's icon: affordable, innovative, and unmistakably distinctive. Consigned by Stewart Banks.
