This very late Austin Healey 3000 MKIII Phase II is a genuine UK example with an incredible comprehensive history dating right back to the late 1960’s verifying its lovely mileage of just 68,000. This Home Market car is a very genuine example, a matching numbers car with paperwork recording its maintenance over the past 50 years. The Big Healey was first registered on the 16th August 1967 as OUW 967F and the car covered 12,000 miles in its first year with its Wimbledon, SW20 based owner.
In 1968 Camden Motors Limited sold the Healey to the second owner, the bill of sale is on file and totals £1090. Accompanying the invoice is a Camden Motors receipt and written Specific Guarantee all in the name of the cars Ilford based second owner. Maintenance invoices make interesting reading, in late 1968 a new petrol pump was fitted, by 1969 the Healey was ready for a clutch and shortly after was coloured changed from Old English White to British Racing Green.
In 1971 at 28,000 miles the owner decided to take the Healey off the road, it was put on blocks with all precautions taken to prevent deterioration. The Austin Healey spent ten years in hibernation and in 1981 was put back on the road with a new exhaust system, 4 new splined hubs, clutch slave cylinder, front brake discs and pads and two front tyres. In February 1982 the car was sold to its third owner with 31967 genuine miles covered.
Between 1982 and 1987 the Healey covered another 8000 miles and maintenance and upkeep included removing the front and rear wings, undersealing and re-sealing, general servicing, rear tyres, new steering column bushes, new carpets, starter motor stripped and cleaned, overhauled brake servo and in 1987 at 38000 miles the engine stripped and was subject of a light engine rebuild. Invoices for all the work are on file.
In 1988 the Austin Healey 3000 was sold by a Farnham, Surry based Rolls Royce dealership with a mileage of 42,000. The car was sold to Victor Gauntlett, a Freeman of the City of London, known for forming the largest petrol retail business in the UK and for reviving Aston Martin. Victor Gauntlett was Chairman of Aston Martin until 1991 and negotiated in 1986 the return of James Bond to Aston Martin and even supplied his personal pre-production Vantage for the filming of ‘The Living Daylights'. The car was registered to Mr Gauntlett, C/O Aston Martin Sales Ltd. Victor Gauntlett loved classic cars, enjoyed racing Bentleys in club events and became a trustee of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.
Whilst the car remained registered to Victor Gauntlett, C/O Aston Martin until 1991, from 1989 all maintenance was invoiced to the next registered owner who owned the Healey until 2018. The cars long term owner of 26 years registered the car to his Strand WC2B business address but whilst living in Knightsbridge SW1, OUW 967F spent many years between its owners London and Monaco addresses. Superb documentation throughout the 26 years is on file and from 1989 to 1990 JW Services carried out lots of maintenance and upkeep to include a new hood, tonneau, draft excluders, shock absorbers, re-conditioned radiator, new fuel gauge and regulator and brake discs.
In 1991 at 47000 the owner went to the worldwide renowned Aston Martin engine specialists Richard Stewart Williams Ltd for maintenance, but it was much later in 2005 when the Healey went back for major engine work. In 1995 the car was shipped to Monaco and many invoices are on file throughout the late 1990's and early 2000's. RS Williams supplied a new water pump and gasket in 2001 and all labour and work was carried out in Monaco. In 2003 and 2004 Pichler GFG AG Quality Motorcars in Switzerland, well known for its modern super car sales and preparation carried out lots of work to include overhauling the fuel system and in 2005 at 58035 miles the Healey was brought back to the UK to RS Williams for an engine rebuild that including glaze busting and honing the bores for the first time. The engine was fitted with new balanced pistons, big new end and main bearings, rebuilding the cylinder head and fully setting up the engine.
In 2008 at 62609 miles Austin Healey specialists JME charged £8623.04 for work to include fitting new front and rear shock absorbers, new anti-roll bar and mounting rubbers and brackets, fitting new wheel bearings and seals, cleaning out hubs and stripping out the rear splines and fitting new bearing and oil seals. A full check of the electrical system was carried out, a rear main oil seal kit was fitted, a new bell housing oil seal fitted, and all new gearbox mounting fitted. A new gearbox/speedo angle drive was fitted, an aluminium sump guard was fitted. The hood, frame and woodwork were removed and cleaned, the underside was steam cleaned and the underbody sprayed with cavity wax, a high capacity radiator was fitted and a brand new carpet set fitted. Finally, an exchange speedometer was fitted to the car.
From 2012 to 2017 the Healey was back in Monaco and a further 5000 miles had been covered by the time the car sold to most recent owner in 2018. Invoices are on file throughout its final years in Monaco with the most significant expenditure being fitting £1700 of parts supplied by RS Williams. In 2018 Rawles serviced the Healey for the most recent owner and the car hasn't been used, just kept in a dry, heated garage.
Adding to the unbelievable history of the car is a FIVA Identity card and passport and paperwork from the Automobile Club de Monaco. There is also a photo of the car on a European Rally with various sponsorship stickers fitted.
OUW 967F is a fantastic driving car with a brilliant, powerful engine which is expected considering it was RS Williams who rebuilt it. The car still retains a huge amount of originality including its original Ambla 2+2 seating and door panels which is commensurate with the low mileage of 68000. A notable and very rare item to the car is that is still wears its original front emblem of which it is little known that these should be red painted on Phase II cars unlike reproduction parts which have an incorrect finish. The car presents incredibly well with excellent gaps, straight panels and is currently being prepared to ensure it will be leaving us with an gleaming first class paint finish. Chrome work is generally of a very high standard, chrome wire wheels are in lovely condition and this fabulous car comes with full weather equipment. There is no doubt this is a very interesting car with a strong Aston Martin connection, low ownership, low mileage, incredible paperwork and lots of originality verified by its comprehensive history file.
