The Audi quattro is a car from the Audi brand. The Audi quattro was the first Audi road car model with four-wheel drive to be mass-produced. The model also achieved great success in motorsports. Quattro is Italian for "four."

History
In the mid-1970s, Audi conceived the idea of developing a passenger car with four-wheel drive. This followed the introduction of the then-new Audi 100 in Scandinavia. During test drives with the Audi 100, Jörg Bensinger, the then test leader and creator of the Audi quattro, drove a Volkswagen Iltis, an off-road vehicle not designed for road use, but specifically for these kinds of harsh conditions. This Iltis handled much better in winter conditions than the exclusive Audi 100; its acceleration and handling put the Audi 100 in the shade. Bensinger convinced Ferdinand Piëch, chairman of the vehicle development department, that there was a market for four-wheel-drive (road) cars. To revive the somewhat forgotten Audi slogan "Vorsprung durch Technik" (Forward through Technology), a budget was requested from the board of directors to develop an Audi with four-wheel drive.

Audi then designed a prototype four-wheel drive system based on the Audi 80, featuring the 100% mechanical four-wheel drive system with a center differential from the DKW Munga. People knew it was good when, on a snowy mountain road in Austria, where a snow chain manufacturer happened to be testing its product at the time, jaws literally dropped as this Audi 80, equipped only with winter tires, sped past the car with snow chains. The quattro was born.

In March 1980, the Audi quattro Coupé, a turbocharged sports coupé with four-wheel drive, was unveiled for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show and was hailed as a sensation by trade journalists.

The quattro presented here is from 1983. It's black with a dark gray interior featuring green trim. It has only 117,000 km on the odometer and drives like a new car. The car has a magnificent sound, produced by the 200 hp 5-cylinder turbocharged engine! A very powerful engine for its time. It is also an icon in the automotive world, setting the tone for Audi, and many others followed suit.
