Description

In 1966 when Alfa Romeo presented the new Spider 1600, the task of replacing the small Giulietta/Giulia Spider – so loved by all of Italy – was very challenging. However, the master designer Pininfarina managed to give Alfa the greatest sports car success ever, with a new design that would survive almost unchanged in a car model produced for four decades. Part of giving the new 105-series Spider a kick-start among car lovers, was undoubtedly its participation in the film ‘The Graduate’ from 1967, with a debuting Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft as the fantastic Mrs. Robinson. In connection with the presentation, Alfa Romeo announced a naming competition, where over 100,000 suggestions were submitted. The winning name was “Duetto” – which in Italian means ‘for two’ or a double. But the name was already used by a chocolate manufacturer, so Alfa was not allowed to use the name officially. But with Alfisti all around the model was still known as the Duetto, a nickname that stuck until it was facelifted in 1967 when the rear of the car got the sharply cut tail. In fact, the Italians still use this nickname even today for all series 105 Spider versions.

Technically, the Duetto was made with the classic 1600 “North” engine in aluminum and with 2 overhead camshafts.  Delivering a mighty 109 bhp, clearly more powerful than similar 1600 engines of its time. Porsche only managed to get 90 hp from their Super 90 engine for comparison. Add to that a 5 speed gearbox and disc brakes all around – it’s a real sports car.

This Duetto has just been finished after an absolutely complete restoration in every detail. The body has been sanded down to the bare metal and painted in the classic Pininfarina Rosso, a very high-quality paintwork. Mechanically, both the engine, gearbox, brakes and chassis have been completely overhauled. Inside, the cabin has also been renewed, although a few parts are still the well-preserved originals. And as the final touch, the car was fine tuned on a rolling road by a well-known Alfa specialist, so it drives like an Alfa should.

The car is ready to be enjoyed by its new lucky owner and is just waiting for a connoisseur who understands and appreciate the high quality this car offers.
