The Alfa Romeo Montreal was never a car with a modest introduction. It was first shown as a concept car at Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada, and received its name because the public simply started referring to it that way. Alfa Romeo decided to keep the name. Sometimes marketing really is no more complicated than listening to people who are standing around a car with genuine enthusiasm.

The design came from Marcello Gandini at Bertone, and it shows. The Montreal features details you will find on very few other cars: the partially covered headlights, the NACA duct in the hood, the striking vents behind the doors, and the muscular rear end. This is not an understated coupé. It is a design that perfectly demonstrates just how free and ambitious Italian automotive styling could be in the early 1970s.

Under the hood lies a 2.6-liter V8 with dry-sump lubrication and SPICA fuel injection. A remarkable piece of engineering, especially for a road car of this era. The engine was inspired by Alfa Romeo’s motorsport experience and produces around 200 horsepower. Combined with a five-speed manual transmission from ZF and a limited-slip differential, the Montreal delivered performance that was very serious for its time. Top speed was around 220 km/h.

And yet, the Montreal is not just about numbers. Its character comes above all from the combination of that V8, the long nose, the low seating position, and the way the car feels like a true Italian GT. Not clinical, not distant, but mechanical, lively, and instantly recognizable. Even standing still, a Montreal already has a sense of drama. Start the engine, and that impression only becomes stronger.

This example dates from 1973 and is finished in Verde Montreal with a light brown interior. It is an exceptionally fitting combination. The green paint beautifully emphasizes the shape of the body and, of course, directly references the model name. The light interior adds warmth and contrast and suits the car’s bold yet elegant character perfectly.

The condition of this Montreal is exceptionally good. The exterior presents beautifully, with deep gloss, a crisp overall appearance, and the correct details. The chrome, glass, distinctive louvers, and characteristic nose all come together as a highly convincing whole. The interior is equally outstanding. The light upholstery, dashboard, instruments, and overall finish give the car exactly the right atmosphere. Well cared for, full of character, and clearly preserved with attention.

For many years, this Alfa Romeo formed part of the family collection of Fred van Lingen. For Alfa enthusiasts, that name needs little introduction. Fred van Lingen was known as “Mister Alfa” and possessed technical knowledge at such a high level that solutions were found even when the factory itself no longer had them. The fact that this Montreal comes from such an environment says a great deal about the way it was treated.

A particularly interesting detail: Fred used his last NOS pistons to rebuild the engine of his own Montreal. That is easy to understand. Some parts are not saved for just any car. You use them for the car that deserves them. In this case, that car was this one.

The car is in mint condition and has had only three previous owners. The combination of condition, provenance, color scheme, and technical background makes this a highly attractive Montreal. The model itself is already special enough. Approximately 3,900 examples were built, and the car was never officially sold in the United States. Not because it would not have appealed there, but because it was not quite “green” enough for the emissions regulations.

A 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal finished in Verde Montreal with a light brown interior. From the long-standing Fred van Lingen family collection, with a rebuilt engine and only three previous owners. An exceptionally beautiful Montreal in a strong color combination, with the right history, presence, and engineering.
