Description

Model history

The basic body shape shared by all 105/115 series coupés was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone. It was one of his first major projects for Bertone, and borrowed heavily from his earlier design for the Alfa Romeo 2000 Sprint/2600 Sprint. The balance of glass and metal, the influence of the shape of the front and rear glass on the shape of the cabin, and the flat grille with incorporated headlamps were groundbreaking styling features for the era.

All models featured the four cylinder, all-light-alloy Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine in various cubic capacities from 1290 cc to 1962 cc, all with two valves per cylinder. All versions of this engine fitted to the 105 series coupés featured twin carburettors, except for US market 1750 GTV and 2000 GTV cars which were fitted with fuel injection. Competition models featured cylinder heads with twin spark plugs. Common to all models was also a 5-speed manual transmission and disc brakes on all four wheels. The rear suspension uses a beam axle with coil springs. Air conditioning and a limited slip rear differential were optional on the later models.

The Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce, also known as the 2000 GTV, was introduced in 1971 together with 2000 the Berlina sedan and 2000 Spider. The 2000 range was the replacement for the 1750 range. Once again Alfa rationalized the engine throughout the range. The engine displacement was increased to 1962 cc with a change of the bore and stroke to 84 mm x 88.5 mm. Oil and radiator capacities remained unchanged. It resulted in an engine producing 130 HP at 5500 RPM. Cars destined for the American and Canadian markets once again featured SPICA fuel injection, while other markets retained the carburetors.

The interior trim was also changed, with the most notable differences being the introduction of a separate instrument cluster, instead of the gauges installed in the dash panel in earlier cars. The 2000 GTV is most recognizable by its grille with chrome horizontal bars, featuring protruding blocks forming the familiar Alfa heart and the larger rear light clusters. Those were first fitted to US 1750 GTV’s, but were now standard for all markets on the 2000 GTV.

This example

This specific Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV was manufactured on the 10th of March 1973 and sold on the 29th of August to Genoa, Italy. This example has a ‘Lusso’ specification with green tinted glass and alloy ‘Mille Righe’ wheels. 

After having spent its life in Italy, we acquired this car in Maranello Italy for one of our customers in The Netherlands in 2015. In 2016 the engine was completely overhauled by a Dutch specialist and tested on the bench delivering 135 bhp. In 2020 we sold the car to the second Dutch owner. The owner is a life long Alfa Romeo enthusiast and has very high standards so it was decided after servicing the car to rebuild the rear axle and the brakes and many small things. In 2021 the car was serviced after and valves adjusted. Some 10.000 Euro was spent at Alfa specialists in the past 2 years. The car performs now even better and has a strong engine and the gearbox is smooth without cracks. Driving a fast GTV always turns out to be a great experience. The bodywork is in very nice condition with good panel gaps. The rear wings are still untouched and razor sharp. The interior is as if it was only a few years old not nearly 50 years already. The engine bay still carries the original stickers.

This lovely car comes with several invoices from Italy and is complete with its original  ‘Uso e Manutenzione’ and old ASI and FIVA papers.  Beautifully finished in a classic colour combination with its original and lovely ‘Cinghiale Maremma’ interior, the car is a real pleasure to look at and to drive.
