The first model was unveiled in 1977. It was powered by a 496 cc liquid-cooled 80° V-twin, a cylinder size which made it a good seller in Europe. The CX 500 Turbo model was unveiled at the Cologne Motor Show in 1980. This model foreshadowed the aesthetic modifications to the second series of the base version, and represented the first appearance of a turbo on a production bike. The CX 500 Turbo was an attractive bike with a very high level of finish and comfort. The compression ratio was brought down from 10:1 to 7.21:1 to prevent excessive stress, and the exhaust valves were made 2 mm smaller to accelerate the exhaust gases and spin up the turbo more quickly.
