Honda capitalized on the success of their ground breaking CB750 4 cylinder firstly by creating a twin cam head for the engine and then by enlarging it to 900cc. The Honda CB900 was a wonderful progression on from the original design and they proved particularly popular in the racing world both in the AMA series where Freddie Spencer was dominating on one and in endurance racing where Honda were cleaning up with their CB900 based RCB and RS1000s.
The success on the track let to success in the showroom and the model sold well through the late 70s and early 80s. A large part of the Honda CB900’s appeal came from the engine that had been tuned to give lots of torque rather than just peak horsepower yet despite this it still delivered 95hp. Like is predecessor it had a 5 speed gearbox with a wet clutch, twin shock rear suspension and Honda TRAC (anti-dive) front forks. The large engine and sturdy twin downtube frame meant that this bike was never going to be a light-weight but with twin disc brakes on the front and another disc at the rear the bikes stops well.
This 1981 Honda CB900F was sold by specialists H.G.B Motorcycles of Ruislip on 21st of April 1981 to a Mr Timothy Rogers. Mr Rogers kept the bike until Christmas 1982 when he sold it to Martin Baldwin who would keep the bike 31 years before selling it to the current owner in 2013. Despite the bike being in generally good condition the bike was given a major overhaul in 2013/14 having a complete repaint inspired by Freddie Spencer’s AMA success, a racing ‘Bol d’Or’ Giuliari seat was added, the brakes stripped and rebuilt with braided brake lines, the forks were rebuilt (£580), a major service done on the engine, smaller indicators were used, a complete Vance and Hines exhaust system was put on as well as new tyres.
Since this work has been carried out the bike has been used regularly but gently and it has now covered just over 26,000 miles from new. Apart from the exhaust, all the original parts for the bike have been kept and come with it as well as its original owners manual, service booklet and even the original dealers keyring. There are numerous invoices for work carried out and the bill of sale from when Martin Baldwin acquired the bike in 1982.
This Honda CB900F has always been dry stored from new and its exception condition is testament to this. These bikes where the last of the true aircooled era and to find one with just 2 owners for the past 36 years in this wonderful condition is increasingly difficult. These usable classics have grown in popularity considerably so now is the time to get a good one.
