The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II ranks among the most exclusive British luxury automobiles of its era. Produced between 1959 and 1962, approximately 2,717 examples were built, including around 2,417 standard-wheelbase versions and 299 long-wheelbase versions. At the time, the Silver Cloud II was reserved for a particularly wealthy clientele and represented the pinnacle of British luxury, prestige and craftsmanship. With its imposing bodywork, exceptionally refined finish and virtually silent driving comfort, it was one of the most prestigious automobiles one could own in the early 1960s.
One of the most significant technical improvements over the Silver Cloud I was the introduction of an entirely new 6.2-litre V8 engine. This powerplant replaced the previous six-cylinder engine and offered considerably more power and flexibility, while the automatic transmission provided the characteristic smooth and comfortable driving experience. The Silver Cloud II was particularly appreciated in the American market, where its powerful V8, impressive appearance and luxurious equipment perfectly matched the expectations of wealthy buyers.
This 1962 example is particularly interesting because it was originally built to American factory specifications and equipped with left-hand drive from the factory. Although Rolls-Royce also produced left-hand-drive vehicles for other export markets, this configuration distinguishes it from the traditionally right-hand-drive examples intended for the British domestic market. Its original destination for the American market is also confirmed by the factory documentation. Special factory options include electric windows and a front bench seat, two features that further emphasise the luxurious character and specific original configuration of this Rolls-Royce.
The absolute highlight of this vehicle, however, is its exceptionally extensive original factory documentation. This includes not only the usual vehicle documents but also detailed records of the original construction, assembly and technical configuration of this particular Rolls-Royce. Such documentation provides an exceptionally valuable insight into the vehicle's factory history and represents a significant advantage for collectors who value authenticity, provenance and originality.
The production history is documented down to the exact day. Chassis assembly took place on 26 April 1962, followed by the installation of the bodywork on 30 April 1962. Both body assembly and final body finishing were completed on 2 May 1962. The final body inspection was carried out on 23 May 1962, more than a month before the vehicle's first registration on 30 June 1962. These exceptionally detailed records make it possible to reconstruct the vehicle's production history step by step.
Equally valuable is the original engine build card, which records the technical specifications and modifications of the V8 engine. In addition, the documentation contains extensive factory information regarding the originally supplied gearbox, chassis and running gear. These records make it possible to compare the vehicle's technical configuration with its original factory specifications. Together with the original vehicle documents, manuals and maintenance invoices, they form an exceptionally complete historical archive that goes far beyond the documentation usually accompanying a classic car.
The vehicle itself is finished in an elegant silver exterior colour and underwent an older professional restoration, during which the bodywork was repainted and the interior was restored. The carpets are in very good condition, while the engine compartment presents itself in good, honest condition. The inspection report also mentions several technical points requiring attention.
With its limited production numbers, original left-hand-drive configuration, American factory specifications, special factory options and, above all, its exceptionally extensive and detailed original factory documentation, this Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II represents a particularly interesting example. For enthusiasts or collectors seeking not only a prestigious British luxury automobile but also a vehicle whose original construction and technical history are thoroughly documented, this Silver Cloud II offers an exceptionally attractive combination.
